Duck attacked by Raccoon (Still alive is there hope?)

She is doing good still no sense of sight. I am always full of hope one day that it miraculously comes back. I have her fully integrated into the rest of the group now so there are 11 in total. She seems to be doing okay - still maybe some pecking order since she was out of the group for almost 3 months now. I let her free range with the rest during the day so it is always a hunt when I get home to where she will be found. She must be getting her bearings now on where things are located from where I put her each morning because after she is done eating and drinking she tries to walk down the pond - albeit her angle is off the direction is correct. I put her in front of food and water several times a day to make sure she is getting nutrition besides the bugs and grass and algae when she makes it to the pond. I am hoping that they will help guide her a little more each day as they fully accept her back. She has been next to them for a month in another cage so they have been around her for awhile. The boys are definitely happy she is back!

What an amazing story and I am always amazed at how resilient our little duck friends truly are!

Our little mallard was attacked by a dog about 3 years ago and we went through much of the same as what you did for sweet Peeps. She does not always lay anymore and she has some PTSD tics but the bigger the flock the more adapted she seems to be.

Thanks for sharing your story and I am so glad that this one had a happy ending!

She continues to thrive I have to put her in the backyard Koi pond now since it gets dark so early the canoe rodeo at night in the big pond is getting a little hard to chase her down. She has put all her weight back on and she might be laying again finally. She gets along much better than I expected and is totally integrated back into her flock. She is our special duck now and just needs a little extra loving to get by - which is okay by us

Hi sorry to barge in butmh ducks were attacked by a raccoon. Spiceduck is gone :-( Patch is alive but her beak is shredded. Thebottom is alm8st gone and the top is shredded. We can not afford the vet so we have her in the house in a box with hay. It happened night before last and I have mixed food with water and she drinks some every few hours. But I don't know if she is pooping or not hate to bother herby picking her up again. Just wondering if I should try to save her? Will her beak grow back? Or am I just making her suffer?

So very sorry about this, how did it happen? You really do need to pick Patch up and clean her up laying in her own poop can cause problems too. I have a very old drake inside right now and I use old clean towels for under him then I can take them out wash and reuse keeps them so much cleaner. I think every animal should have a chance, if she can drink that is good. Have you checked her for other injuries also they can hide very good under all the feathers any wound needs to be cleaned out with saline wash. I don't know how well bills on water fowl heal, My gander has punctured his bill and it healed fine but growing a new one I just don't know about. I have heard of ducks still being able to eat with part of a bill missing you may have to always feed her a liquid diet. I would get some Veterycin for wounds and infections and spray her bill a couple times a day that way you won't have to touch it to apply any meds.

Welcome to BYC! Can you post some pictures?

Today I gave her a shower and she seemed to like it. She's drinking clear water and some water with Layena chicken food dissolved in it. The bottom beak is not as bad as I thought. The top beak is bad with bits sticking out. She does not get up or even try though. Is that normal?
