Duck Breed Focus - Indian Runner

Ran some baby kale through the food processor so the peeps could have a fresh treat. I think they like it!

You are missing out on the best part.... Hold out the whole leaf of kale and let them tear it apart. Less work and more fun for you and more fun for them!!! They need to learn to rend!!!

When mine were that size, everything got chopped into itty bitty bits - I was so worried about choking!

These days, with adults, I'll grab a handful of comfrey and lean over the gate and let everyone tear into it.

Don't forget to offer chick grit when feeding anything other than their chick starter. That maybe tiny enough but might as well get them started on some grit offered in separate bowl close to their feed.

With my first ones, I was über cautious (they didn't get lettuce until they were 3 weeks or so), but Noir and Mystique got a little lettuce to rip on (supervised of course) after a few days (not much though, I didn't want to throw off their diet too much that young - just introduce foods - maybe 1 meal worm or 1 leaf of Kale (probably not the whole thing). I have been amazed at what ducks do swallow and lettuce is pretty bulky for its mass, so I think whatever they got it would compress OK as long as it is the leaf (with Kale maybe the stem bases would be too much but I don't think they could tear them off while supervised). If anyone has had any bad experiences, please post them (and I will hang my head as a bad dad), but for me it went OK.

Chick grit is important when feeding anything but crumbles!!!

Like Amiga, I have a mostly white chocolate runner now as well
This was right around her 5th birthday a couple of months ago

Same Cadbury duck when she was about 6 months or so

I will in a couple weeks, when they're not so terrifyingly itty-bitty! I'm glad your two did fine, and I'm sure mine would too, but I'd rather be overly cautious than regretful ^_^

Same! I'm worried about EVERYTHING when they're tiny like this!

Comfrey + duck poop? You must have the most lush garden in your whole city!

:D heck no! I'm in love with my baby peepers! But there will be plenty of pictures. I actually put out a bowl of chick grit a couple days ago in anticipation of their first new food, so they'd have a little bit built up and ready ^_^

My big drake, Zuko, has had a giant, squishy breast since he was about 6 weeks old. You could actually see a definite line between it and his underside, and it moved independent from his body, it was so prominent (I called it his uniboob)

We were super worried about it for a while, but it never seemed to bother him or get worse, and he's a VERY good eater, so we just sort of assumed he was some kind of mix breed (maybe Cayuga) and maybe a bit chubby. But today, it seems to have disappeared!

Is that weird? It seems weird...
