Duck Hatch-A-Long ~ Wanna Join?

UGH broody quit last night. Went in to see her on a perch - how is it I have silkies that won't even last 10 days!!! Maybe it was too "busy" around her lately. But of course, 9 of 9 saxony eggs have great vessels (and 4 of those were in the fridge for several days). THey were stone cold so don't know if any will survive (it was end of day 9) but threw them in the bator. I always thought silkies could hatch rocks, these 2 black ones have failed me twice so far. Good thing they are darn cute!

I put each broody in a dog crate...keeps other hens from disturbing them, and keeps them on the nest doing their job. They have food and water right in front of them, so they are usually content, and I haven't had one quit that was in "broody jail". I have a showgirl that has been sitting on 5 Call eggs for 8 days now, and all 5 are growing.

Hmmmm...thinking I have another showgirl going broody

I already have another crate set up for her when she's for sure ready, and plenty of eggs to choose from.

I took pics of my four that hatched, I'm thinking I have 1 butterscotch, 2 blue bibbed, and 1 blue fawn maybe? I just can't post the pics till tonight DH took the laptop to work which has the pics on it! They are so adorable. I decided to open up the last one and it was slightly deformed, it internally pipped but quit. It was missing part of its beak and had only one nostril, glad it didn't hatch.

Yeah, it's no fun when they hatch with deformities. But yah!!! you have 4 cuties!!

I've got a friend who has me on quitting broody watch this week. If her broody quits, I must make room in the hatcher.

for broody to do her job.

I have been candling my duck eggs the past couple of nights and I am fascinated by the movement you can see in them. It is just amazing. This is my first time hatching ducks. My hatch date is 2 weeks from today. I am so excited!!!!

I candled again last night and I think I still see veins so thats a good sign (right?) . I have 2 Rouen eggs that look completely dark except for the air cell and 2 Guinea eggs the same way. 1 Guinea egg looks like it started to develop but stoped a while ago. I am crossing my fingers these last 4 eggs hatch, lockdown is Saturday . This is my first time and boy I never realized how many factors go into these eggs making it till hatch. Its deffinitly a learning experience.

I brought the little duckies home last night. They are SO STINKING CUTE -I could (and have) watched them for hours. I'm like a mother hen, I think I've checked them 100 times in the 12 hours they've been home!

This is "Quoffle" the largest of the ducklings

This is "seeker" the tiniest

And this is "Snitch" the golden child

And here is a picture I took for size reference (coke can is not part of their brooder set-up!)

Oh and here is a picture I took for size reference: Just for reference the color possibilities in this group are: Grey, Snowy, Pastel, Butterscotch and Magpie. I think the first two are the same color, grey or possible magpie? The last would be a pastel, snowy or butterscotch?

Tell me about it....definitely a learning experience here, too.

I'm still going to say butterscotch on the golden one, but that's still a guess. Maybe grey on the other two, but again a guess...lol
