Here are my ducks. I have a Swedish blue, Cayuga, and pekin.

I may try to get some in the spring...I just want to make sure I can make them safe and happy. We have a lot of predators here so there’s a lot to consider.

Make sure you enclose an area just for your ducks to play! If you free range, like I have done, they will quickly make a wreck of your yard! My adult ducks.. with help from my almost adult geese..dig like they're part back hoe!! Lol. They're wonderful pets and great fun..but they will tear up grass and play in mud like crazy! We're constantly filling holes they've made. It's astonishing how fast they can get into mischief. I try to keep up with them, but it's a lot of work. Any plants you value need to be closed off or moved. If they can get to them they'll eat them and those they don't eat they break or up root.
I'm not trying to discourage you from keeping ducks. I love mine! You can't possibly be sad around them! Their little waddling butts are hilarious and their antics are outrageous! Lol. They're great fun! I suggest that if you're considering buying some in the spring that you start preparing for them now. While you're gardening this fall, consider how you will enclose your plants and which ones might be dangerous to your pets.
Water is a must have. A small pool is good for 1 or 2 small ducks but bigger ducks like Pekin's need more room. A pool looks great with playing ducks.. for 5 minutes and then it's a messy chore. In areas where drought is an issue in the summer the frequent water changes can become a problem. We're already planning a pond! I am anyway! Lol My husband is still scratching his head about it!
Asking owners about the breeds they have and how they differ can help you choose ones that you can truly enjoy the most! They really are quite different in behavior and personality. I refer to my Rouens as little gangsters! Lol. Small, willful, clever and very mischievous! They're very quick, fly well & love to dive! The deeper the water the better for them! My Pekin is a sweetheart but she's much slower and larger than the others. Of course she loves the water too, but she'd much rather sit & float for hours than dive & dart with the Rouens! 2 youngsters I think are Aylesbury ducks but not sure. They're not calm natured like Pekin's and are rather boisterous in nature.
Considering these issues and preparing for them before you bring home your ducklings will save you a lot of headaches and make your time with your new pets in the spring a lot more rewarding and less overwhelming!
You're very smart to plan ahead and resist the urge to adopt them before you're ready!

GORGEOUS!!! I'm dying to get a Cayuga and a Sweedish! I'd love to hear your observations about these two breeds!! I adore my Pekin!

P.S. My ducks also enjoy eating mud, and they often eat huge holes into the ground!
