Duck with Swollen Ankle

Is this look right? https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/durvet-calcium-gluconate-500-ml?cm_vc=-10005

What chance would you say that this would solve the problem? Or is it likely to be healed with water therapy every day with other anti-inflammatory herbs and such.

My biggest concern is the inflammation/infection turning into sepsis... what has been your experience with this? Is this curable with anything other than antibiotics?

On a side note... what is an epsom salt compress? I seen it recommended in a lot of places but not how to do it. Is it simply applying the epsom salt to the area of swelling and pressing it their?

And how can I tell if she has sprained her "good" foot? Any way to tell? I'm guessing if she did it would be swelling, but I can't see anything wrong with the foot.

I know that is the calcium gluconate for soft shelled eggs. I am not sure of the outcome using this for your issue, as this is new to me. I think your water therapy and herbs can definitely help, just know when using multiple products on this, they can’t be used together. Like the dmso can’t be used with clear iodine or manuka honey (I use manuka honey on my BF issues and was told not to use them together, so I assume this can be the case when we use actual chemical components and herbal healing techniques together)

In my opinion, this looks like the BF has spread to the ankle. Mine did the same thing, started on web, went to right side of ankle then went to left side of ankle. 6 months in the making right here! I went to the vet numerous times and had to cut the infection out each time with antibiotics. Each time it healed then popped up in a new spot. I think some are just prone to recurring issues.

Epsom salt compression is just a pile of Epsom salt lightly watered to make a paste. Most wrap BF with this when there is a spot to remove not so much when there is no entry point for the infection. The last infection my gal got had no entry point. I think she got it by getting out of the kiddy pool when a plane flew by....silly girl!!

She may just be favoring both legs because of the one that is injured, she may know that she does not have enough strength in the other foot to hold her up, there may not be anything wrong with the other leg.

@casportpony will have to give more information on this as she may have more experience in this matter.

Thank you so much for your detailed response... glad that yours recovered - it's reassuring, especially when it takes so long. I have also heard not to use chemical (or "Western" medicine) along with herbal remedies. I much rather go with the herbal natural treatment. Turmeric is something that we use a lot in our culture so I know a lot of it's great benefits and recently learned that oregano is also a great anti-inflammatory. Stuck a bunch of stuff together, ground it together and slathered it on lol. Ok the EP compress sounds exactly like what I was doing - but I see your saying it's not so effective without an entry point.

Could you explain exactly what the DMSO does? I believe Miss Lydia mentioned it earlier. I wouldn't be squeamish about having to cut it open to remove pus or whatever, but also fully aware that it'd probably cause a lot more problems than it would solve.

My duck got bad bumblefoot that got into the ankle this year, looked a lot like that swelling wise. We didnt get to him in time to stop it getting into the bones, yours looks similiar but is still smaller. To make her comfortable and off both legs if the other is injured you could make a sling like thing for her. With good food and water ri glin front in reach. (Works for chickens, though never tried it with ducks yet.)

Oh no... did you have to put her down? That's what I've been worried about too.

The DMSO is an anti inflammatory/pain reliever gel used on horses. It can be found in the horse section at your local TSC.

Turmeric is something that I have used as well

So today she didn't get out of the coop, but she is using her good foot a little more. She's in the kitchen sink right now for her soak and is busy taking a bath; which I take as a good sign. Had to cover up all the dishes though :D The swelling is now very firm, hardly squishy at all @casportpony I wonder if that has anything to do with the salve I applied yesterday?
