They can and do get worms from eating earthworms and other bugs, but the only way to know if you *should* de-worm is to get routine fecals done by a vet or a lab. I have many duck so I don't de-worm my flock, but if one stArts looking a little iffy, one of the first things I do is de-worm them.

Dawg53 has some good posts on how climate can affect your flock's worm burden... I'll see if I can find one for you to read.

How would you define looking "iffy"? Thanks.

I just bought a bag of Durvet Strike III Natural Poultry Pellets with pumpkin seed, oregano and garlic - it's supposed to create an intestinal environment to prevent worms. Has anyone used it? Does it work? Or did I waste my money LOL? They like it so I guess it works as a treat, even if it doesn't prevent worms....
Lots of products like this out there, but none of them are effective. :( but as you said, they like it, so it's a nice treat. :D

Flystrike worms/maggots are different than intestinal worms.
All of this is new to me. Honestly, it was very disturbing seeing maggots/worms in/on my ducklings and we lost a few. We had 16 successful ducklings hatch and I would be very sad if we lost anymore. I don’t even know if it was flystrike at all but just what people have told me. I guess if I see anything else like it I’ll take the duck to the vet to be sure.

So sorry you went through that. :hugs I know from personal experience how disturbing it can be. How old are your ducklings and where was the flystrike?

All the ducklings that died from flystrike were hatched from on the 17th/18th and only 4 survived. My other nest hatched 12 and we didn’t lose any.

It was around their ‘belly button’ (not sure what it’s called for ducks) but where they were connected to the yolk.

Someone else recently went through the same thing. Since they hatched only a couple of weeks ago they are too young to need de-worming, so don't worry about that.

A hatching chick or duckling is the perfect place for flies to lay their eggs since it so moist and warm, so next time be sure to check them as they are hatching for signs that flies have been laying eggs (I'll see if I can find some pictures).

If you have lots of flies you might want to think about trying to reduce the fly population. Maybe set fly traps and spray?
