Early February 2016 Hatch - Who's In?

Just went and turned the light on where the brooder is

I love the first few days with baby chicks - they are so amusing. My DS and his roommates took three home yesterday - with a brooder I set-up for them and my extra ecoglow and implicit instructions

Two Favs and a cochin - I told them since only 5 cochins hatched they could only have one since I wanted all the rest!

If you lived near lower Alabama I would offer you some of my hatch. I've got 30 that look like they will go into lockdown Monday and all roosters are destined for the cook pot from this batch. It's time to get an unrelated Cochin for next years hatches. All I have right now that will be culled this week are from the same sir save 2 that got mixed in and I forgot to mark so I can't tell them apart.

That reminds me... Anyone near the mobile al area wanting a nice black Australorp baby mail me. I'm going to be overrun with them very soon.

Yeah I will have lots of extras too - I will only be keeping 4 but I think I will try to keep all of them until 2 or so weeks for the Fav and several weeks for the Cochins so I don't accidentally get rid of any females.

Good idea. I've got a home for my 2 youngest Roos right now. But all others will be culled so I can refresh my bloodline.

Yes! These barnyard mixes are so hardy. First hatched and first feathered. Woke up to 4 more pips in the Ameraucana eggs. Two pipped on the bottom and one of those was on the wrong side. Yikes! Flipped them over super quick and misted so I didn't lose humidity. Both are breathing. Really want a nice little rooster from these Ameraucanas so HATCH CHICKIES, HATCH!

Pretty weird hoping for a roo, lol.

Well idk why some don't turn into position. I have had some hatch from that position, but it is very important you don't open and let out humidity as they will get stuck. I'd give them 24hrs. I usually give all pipped eggs at least 24hrs because even pipped eggs can still be absorbing yolk sacs. If they aren't hatched by then, then it's your call whether you help them or not. If I'm not waiting on others that have pipped to hatch, I usually get them out and help. I wrap them in a nice warm very damp washcloth while I peel away. In these foam incubators there can be hot and cold spots leading to uneven hatches, so it's hard to decide when to open the bator and get chicks or eggs out and when not to, but for sure if a chick is in the process of zipping, I never open it up.

They seem to be doing good, still aren't zipping but the pip holes are growing and cracking. A black Ameraucana and the lone barnyard mix led the pack! So far those two are hatched and 4 others are pipped!
