Earthquake!

Mahonri, looking at the USGS fault map, it appears to be in the southern extension of the Elsinore fault (a normal fault, which run down through the east side of the valley near Laguna Salada, MX (S of Mexicali) and continues towards the SA fault near the northern end of the Sea of Cortez).

A 7.2! That's a gnarly earthquake. DH and I felt the rolling and it was a good, long one! DHs parents didn't feel it, but their pool was swaying good and the hanging things on the ceiling fan were really swaying.

MoSo, you're a geologist too? My speciality is hydrogeology.

Yep. Worked with environmental hazards (earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, landslides). Currently working on a geothermal project.

And, lol, I do homebrewing as well. Currently have a batch of a clone of my favorite microbrew, Rogue Ale's Dead Guy, and an Amarillo hops-based no-name beer.

Something about geologists and beer......

Yep!! I would love to work in geothermal studying geochemistry and water-rock interactions, etc. Meanwhile, I work in the remediation field.

Studying earthquakes would be a blast! I was suppose to go down to the area of this earthquake for a paleoseismology field course in grad school. That would have been awesome!!

Do you realize what you just asked? That would be 2010 - (minus) 100.

To anyone so inclined... Please do not derail this thread about a current event into a religious discussion about the end of civilization, the last days, etc.

Such topics can be pretty hot-button here. Let's keep the focus on the current event and if/how BYCers were affected. Thanks!

They are showing the damage on the news now and surprisingly there is not that much. A fire started in Calexico, electricity is out is some places, but so far NO injuries. For a 7.2 quake that is a miracle.

Anecdotally, I'd heard that landlines and cells towers are out in a few places in Mexico - I hope that it isn't just a matter of reports not in yet.

I am pretty sure, with a quake that size, there is bound to be more reports. I really expected to hear about more damage at this point though! The videos of the swimming pools is something else!

Sadly, Guadalupe Victoria, the epicenter, is the one really livable area in that part of Baja California. The rest is pretty much all desert.

I checked all of the Spanish language channels. Not a word about it. Heaven forbid they interrupt the soccer game.

I was actually outside skimming the pool and it started to look like someone had been swimming in it. The surface was all wavy and I just thought, "Gee the Kreepy Krawley is doing a number on the surface of the water today".

Then when I thought about where I was at 3:45PM, I realized what I had witnessed.

But I didn't really feel queasy or anything. When I was in Ecuador in some earthquakes, it made me sick to my stomach.
