East RIver - South Dakota

I dont know exactly what our sustained winds were but the news said gusts of 50 mph. Was another dry windy day today. Hope we get some moisture soon or the growing season will be over before it started.

Sorry @jessicaagross I have no need for a rooster but he is gorgeous.

I don't doubt you. Those winds are crazy! Some of the poor hens walked past the shelter belt and were practically blown over LOL. They scrambled back pretty quick. We ended up having a bit of rain last week, but not really enough to matter. I hear you about the growing season, I heard it's supposed to be a drought year, I'm really crossing my fingers it isn't. I'm getting excited by seeing green casting out in the field and have to tell myself to calm down.

Thanks. And no problem. I'm just taking a long shot hoping someone on here would want him. I really like him, and think he is too nice of a bird to butcher. But my hens are ladies of leisure, and don't care for being chased about by an overly excited rooster. They prefer a calmer courting approach LOL

Picked eggs last night and there was a bloody/yolky mess in the nest box along with a mass of bloody tissue. I have no idea which bird it was and was, quite honestly, prepared to find a dead/dying hen this morning. Everyone seems fine though. Anyone have any idea what could have happened?

That's really weird. Glad you aren't having anymore issues.

I love the weather too! I've gotten a jump start on my garden. Chickens are loving all the early bugs. And it's making it easier to brood chicks with the warmer weather!

We put those and some root veggies, broccoli, peas, tomatoes and a couple other early spring things in already. I went a little overboard with the potatoes though! They had a bunch of different kinds this year, before I knew it I was walking out with 6 different kinds. I think I ended up putting in 58 eyes...

at least potatoes are easy, I guess I'll have plenty of them this year. I told myself I wasn't going to go overboard this year with the garden, because last year I went crazy. But, I guess crazy doesn't just wear off! lol

I always plant my herbs in my flower beds. I think it's a good idea, sometimes having a separate veggie garden is WAY too much work.

I plant my herbs in a big barrel planter, they seem to do better, and when they're close to the door I remember to go cut them more often. And I kind of like the way they look.
We put in regular potatoes already, but I want to add some blue ones I think, they just look so cool roasted!
