East RIver - South Dakota

Hi! I'm only an hour West of Mitchell

Hello from south central SD. I am about 14 miles from west river. This is my first year having chickens and I am glad to find others near by!! I also had a few coon attacks which left me with one lone Cayuga drake so if anyone knows of anyone with a Cayuga duck that I could contact I would appreciate it . Otherwise I will be forced to get more chickens to meet my minimum (how sad

) I also have LF brahmas anyone else?

I will have to get some of the girls. The only one I have is of my cockeral/ rooster who is so far from the standard I am almost unsure if I can call him Brahma. He is pretty and good with the ladies and my kids though so that is all I care about. After some detective work and posting on the Brahma page it is the concensus that he is crossed with a GL cochin so I many breed him to my BO to see if I get single combed chicks to confrim suspicion. What do you think Fancy Feathers? I see you have bantam cochins!

I am not patient so I just ordered 3 ducks for my cayuga drake....figured if I get them now by spring they can be left to their own devices. I had to meet the 25.00 minimum at Ideal so I am also getting more Light Brahmas and a few easter eggers. I have seen mixed reviews on the ducklings from ideal but it was the only place I could get sexed ducklings without ordering 10 ducklings and I am not patient enough to wait for the feed stores to start getting them in....Wish me luck!!

I notice they are forcasting freezing rains later in the week. Are any of you taking extra precations?

Figured this thread has been dormant awhile so maybe we can just talk about the weather so we stay relevant lol

Good idea

Most of my chickens are in the coop or the barn, so my precation will just be for me being careful not to fall on the ice! I hate ice..

Me too and especially since we still have snow on the ground. I worry more about our horses than the chickens since the chickens just stay in the coop but the horses are exposed to the elements.

Fancy feather I see you have lavendar orpingtons. Do you show them or are they just for your enjoyment? I have a lone buff orpington (bomgaars) that is pretty but definitly hatchery she is not as plump as one would picture an orpington or maybe it is just because she is next to my Brahmas. Oh well I am hoping for a broody this spring and I think she may end up being just that....ornry thing she is!

I wished I would have showed them at the state fair last year but I didn't. For a project bird mine are pretty nice, I bought them from a breeder in Georgia as chicks. I plan to buy a pair of English blacks in the Spring to breed to them. Maybe.

My horses have a barn but a lot of the time they stand outside and get snowed or rained on.
