I just switched over to sand from deep litter. Here are the benefits and pains so far
Benifits..
- Im going to save a huge amount of money over shavings.
- Easy to scoop like kitty litter and therefore no smell
- I never have to worry about grit
- its one big place for the girls to take a dust bath
- Easy to mix in a little sevin dust.
- no shavings in the water or food trough any more
PAINS..
- If you dont spend 5 minutes every day scooping it, it can easily get away from you
- It has gotten a little dusty in there (not constant dust but ive notice more settled dust on things)
- I know for a fact it will be colder in the winter
- it was a real pain when I first switched, had to shovel in a ton of sand
- I miss the smell of the pine shavings (the sand does not smell bad, but I liked the pine)
