EE or Ameraucana??

It is an EE and a cockerel.

There is nothing wrong with EE's, but the hatcheries misrepresenting their birds get people, especially breeders of true Ameraucana's (notice there is no i in it). I've had both and they both have wonderful qualities.

For myself, it really doesn't matter. I wanted colored eggs, yes, however, I also want to learn about my chickens and not look like an idiot when I try to sell a pair of chickens as Ameraucanas and someone who really does know what they're looking for comes and makes me look like an idiot. I would never purposely misrepresent myself and I would expect the same from the store & hatchery where I bought them. All of their signs and order forms say Ameraucana, not Easter Egger or Ameraucana cross. I do at least know that there is a difference and I don't think it's too much to ask from a hatchery to know the difference either. I did not expect to get a rooster, so I wasn't planning on having to decide what to do with one. However, if I were to decide that I wanted to breed him or sell him to someone for breeding, it is only fair to know what his genetic background is.

That IS what I said. That if its not breed for a particular color pattern such as Wheaton, Black, Silverduckwing, Etc. then it is a E.E. But most of the hatcheries just take all the colors and run them together with no other breeds of chickens mixed in. dont know of a single hatchery that throughs in buff orp or australorp or anyother breeds other than the Americanas in their flocks.

I was looking up info on the different breeds and there is not a breed called Americanas. The info I found was on Ameraucanas and it did say "Ameraucanas were bred from Easter Eggers, a mixed non-standard breed derived from breeding the native South American Araucana with Old World varieties. The APA officially accepted Ameraucana as standard breeds in 1984."

I am happy calling my EE an EE most people know what I am talking about then.

Interesting......I think I will call the local hatchery and just chat with them to see what they say about it. I was a bit confused when I tried to learn about Ameraucanas before we decided to buy some, but I can see it's not really a cut and dry situation here. I shall have to dig deeper and learn more about it, just because it's interesting to know. You all have given me some new things to think about!!

If you talk to a true Ameraucana breeder, they will tell you that it is cut and dry. Either a bird is purebred or it's not. Hatcheries call their mutts Ameraucanas because they think people will think they're a better bird. I have both and love them both, although I may love my Ameraucanas more.

I don't think there are very many Ameraucana breeders who would sell their chicks at hatchery of Tractor Supply prices. I paid $10-$20 each for mine.

Let us know what the hatchery says when you talk to them. I'm curious to know.
