Egg in leg????

i don't see how it could possibly be and egg. the reproductive canal wouldn't have a hole in the canal to lead it to the leg. it has to be a cyst or a tumor. im interested to see what it was.

If you choose to "operate" I would not use regular sewing thread. Whe I took one of my chickens to the vet that I had sewed with regular thread, he said that I should have used something like fishing line because regular thread wicks in bacteria to the area you sewed. I think that baytril has been removed from the OK for poultry list (tho I use it on my parrots still)....check penng or tylan...

There is a core/scab. I would use a warm compress and then lift/remove it to see what drains out. If it is infection or a nasty parasite it will come out. A tumor will be solid.

From the pics, and especially the presence of the scab it looks exactly like what I was describing - an infection, from a bite or wound, that has abcessed. It will not drain on it's own because it is not a liquid pus. In a chicken it turns to something that is more like a rubbery egg yolk. Soak in warm salt water, make a small incision, and dig the gunk out. Rinse the wound well, pack with Neosporin, and make a small stitch or two to close. She should be fine.

I agree with Ruth I would take it out and not bother with the salt baths, something that large and solid does not seem like it would just leak out on its own.

May I jump in here and ask a question? I hope you don't mind......but its a similar problem.

Several years ago, 2 of my hens developed a really bad infestation of mites, especially around their vents. I treated them with some spray and DE in their bedding. The mites went away, but one of them developed a swollen hard knot underneath her vent. I didn't do anything about it because it seemed to not affect her......but she was weakened after that. I'm thinking she might have gotten an infection there, and there was an abscess in there all that time. Is that possible? And that's why she was so weakened?
I eventually put her back with the others because I thought she was recovered enough, but within minutes they were trying to kill her, so I removed her immediately. Unfortunately, when I went back a few hours later to check on her in her crate, she was dead. I felt so bad. Anyhow........since some of you mentioned that infections tend to be hard, knotty things.........I'm thinking she had an abcess all this time and I didn't recognize. Thanks.
