Hello I had three eggs incubating- no real idea when they were to hatch
So I just put them in there and waited. One hatched yesterday and here are pics of the other 2.
They look completely different upon candlingeven tho I took them from the nest on the same day
I just don’t know when they were laid.
Any guidance would be appreciated!
I’m definitely ready to put this incubator away! Also any guidance on putting newborns in with 3 week olds?
I’m afraid to do it but if this one ends up by himself I was hoping they would all play nicely.
Pic1 is the one that has a really larg air cell and I can see moving
Pic2 I see no movement and has a very small air cell
Thanks so much!
Shannon

The first photo has pipped internally so should hatch within the next 48 hours and the second one looks a little behind so you'll have to wait and see what that one does.

I'm not sure about putting new hatchlings in with 3 week olds. That may be too big a gap, but someone else will hopefully be able to advise you there.

Thanks for Responding!
How can you tell it has pipped internally?
Thanks so much!

Agreed, #1 is internally pipped and chick should hatch within a day or 2. #2 is a little behind #1 but will likely internally pip soon too. What is your humidity currently at?

Hey! Thank you for responding :) the incubator I have well brand new and wasn’t particularly cheap I don’t think seems to be having a problem maintaining humidity it keeps swinging wildly from 45 all the way up to 90 if I add just a tiny bit of water it swings really high up and if I take it out it swings reallylow so I’ve been having a really hard time keeping the humidity at any specific number-I basically have to go in there and lift the lid in order for it to stay you know in the range it supposed to be which for me is between 60 and 70% . The first hatch I hatched about 10 and it was much easier to maintain the humidity I’m not sure what changed in there but it’s been much more difficult hatching just three .

Also I thought pipping meant that it had started to hatch like it had just started to poke thru the egg shell. But it sounds like pipping means that it has poked through to the air cell? I know zipping means that’s the last thing they do when they crack the egg open so I think I may have been confused about what pipping is :) LOL

The more eggs in an incubator the more stable the conditions do seem to be. It can take quite awhile for the humidity to stabilise after you add water too so hopefully you'll find that will start to happen soon.

There are two stages to pipping. The first is the internal pip where the chick/duckling etc breaks into the air cell. At this stage they are transitioning to breathing for themselves. They will stay at this stage for around 24 hours. Then the oxygen level in the air cell starts to fall which makes the chick pip externally to get access to fresh air. This too is a critical stage as they absorb the remains of the yolk and the blood from the veins in the membrane of their egg. This usually takes 24 hours for chicks and up to 48 hours for ducklings. Then they start to unzip which can be quick or take up to an hour. :jumpy

Awwww..... that’s so thoughtful! Thank you! The first one hatched it’s a Cayuga I think. The second has not changed. I see no change or movement. So I’m thinking I’ll let it go another day or two?. It’s the last egg. I thought they all were about the same age so just waiting.

Congrats on your duckling - Cayuga's are so pretty.

I found that when one of my duck eggs died just prior to internally pipping the shell got bruised looking spots on it. If it still looks good then there's no harm in giving it another couple of days. :fl
