Hello,

I have a black cooper maran who is about 8 months old. She stared laying in January 15th. She’s been doing this weird thing where she sits in the nesting box, like normal, and then when she’s done and leaves she sings her egg song, but there is no egg in the box. Maybe 3-5 min later, I’ll see an egg randomly in the run. Just on the ground. It’s warm, so I know it just came out of her. And I know it’s her because she’s the only maran I have and the only chicken to lay that deep chocolate colored egg. Why does she just randomly pop out her egg any old place in the run, in the dirt? It’s like she thinks she’s done laying, but she’s not and then it just pops out when she’s pecking around. This is the 4th time that has happened. I checked her bum and it looks normal, no prolapsed vent or anything. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I would put false eggs in a nesting box and see if she will be encouraged to use it. Can keep in coop till lays for day as well.
Funny thing is I do have a fake egg in there. It’s been in there for months. I put it in before all the other chickens I got started laying, and all started laying before her and had/have no problem. I just leave the fake egg in there all the time.

May have to keep in coop till lays for the day. I still have one that insists on laying in coop and not in a nesting box. Always makes nest in back of coop to lay in straw even though others are in a nesting box. It’s the dynamics of young layers.

Are your boxes tall enough for her to stand when the egg passes? Or she may just be eager to join her flock again so she runs out before she's finished. I don't have a roo so some of mine will sing until another lady comes in to join them. If nobody listens they will run out and get another hen then cruise back inside looking like a lil' kid who's waited to long to get to the loo.

i think she has a calcium problem give her a multi vitamin syrup dissolved in water and keep rooster near him dont seperate the pair, maybe it works..
I might try that. Although I’m not sure the calcium problem is it.... they have free access to oyster shells separate from their feed, and I am also feeding them a layer feed with calisum in it as well. The egg was hard, not soft at all. ‍♀️
