Egg Song! Glorious Egg Song!

Looks like four of my six are laying, as of today. I think my second little BO is online. Now waiting for the Australorps to start, and they look like they need more time. I took three of the girls into the garden with me yesterday. Were they never excited: strawberries! kale! weeds! Now I wan to rehome the guinea fowl. They're way too noisy over nothing at all.

Congratulations! It's so fun to watch them grow up and get into the whole routine of being chickens.

We were thinking about getting some Guineas because they are supposed to be good for sighting predators and all, but I don't know if it would be worth it. Our roos are pretty good for that...

Haha! Join the club (The chicken stalking club). I love to watch my chickens go about their day. It's fascinating and so much fun!

The first time I saw one of our chickens lay her egg, I was actually emotional about it. Lol! Silly maybe, but it's like a gift they are giving you and it can't be all that fun for them. They're precious.
It kinda bums me out because my daughter, whose job it is to raise these chickens, is on vacation and is missing this. You are right about it being emotional, there is definitely a connection there.

Those guineas may be good for warning, but it gets out of hand. Too loud and long. Stick with the Roos, if you can.

Thanks! We have lots of things out here that would set them off, like a family of 5 hawks that come around every day until the ravens run them out. Things like that are a constant around here, so they would probably be really noisy - all the time. Lol!

I need someone to tell me what's up with my #2 layer. She has laid 2 eggs thus far (laid her first, skipped a day, laid another). This morning for now over 2 hours has been bwoking up a STORM, going in the coop, back out, in and out, in and out....she's driving me nuts!

This is the hen that accidentally laid her first egg during the night while roosting into the PDZ sand poop tray, and laid her second one up there, too....yikes! About an hour ago on one of her false runs into the coop I picked her up and carefully set her in to one of the nesting boxes, petting her and telling her "this is where we lay our eggs" . She stayed in there for about 5 minutes, ran out to the run and has once again begun the in and out, in and out routine.

I highly doubt she's egg-bound, she's a BIG girl (black australorp) and her first two eggs have been very very small. Just went out there again and gently put her in the nest box....stays for a minute or two and then out she comes. But I'm hoping that by doing this she'll get the point that that's where we lay our eggs...dunno, just thinkin'

UPDATE! Well, she FINALLY laid her egg! I'm telling you, I have never ever seen a hen that bwoks continuously for over an hour like she does! And yes, she laid it up in the sand poop tray....again! I have got to figure out a way to break her of this habit she's gotten herself into. Anyone??

I can't give you any insight about your Australorps. Mine are are 20+ weeks old and not laying yet. BUT I did rehome my guinea fowl. Not only were they bothering me, but a neighbor came over to complain. I was very relieved to find a tanker right away. All quiet on the northern front. Aaaah.

Could you somehow block off the roost during the day and force her to lay somewhere else? Hopefully it wouldn't take too many days of blocking it.
