Egg Song! Glorious Egg Song!

I'd give her as many as you think she can set on.
She'll be there for three weeks not laying and blocking a nesting box..  May as well get as many chicks as you can.
I learned that when TWO of my 5 month Cuckoo Marans went broody at the same time.  I gave them each 6 eggs, but wish I'd given them a dozen each.  9 hatched but I've lost two, so down to 7 chicks.

4 was all I could talk hubby into. Not only that, she's so tiny. She just manages to keep those 4 under her lol. As it is, our coop is full and we can't build an extention or additional coop until at least next spring. I had to tell him that we would eat any cockerels that come out of this batch.... therefore I'm hoping they're all pullets lol. He's been rather stubborn on this chicken math thing. It hasn't affected him as much as it has me but he's slowly giving in. Last time I mentioned "when we get a broody" he said no they can't have eggs. Now that we have one he just rolled his eyes lol

THE EGGS SONG, gosh we never get the egg song hardly ever...? but we have lots of eggs...? like 4 eggs a day from 5 chickens who have started laying at 17.5 weeks old up until now, 4 are barred rocks & one wyandott 2 weeks younger, but NO egg song , no singing hardly ever , thats a bit strange...? isnt it..?

the other day my young wyandott Bee Bee 19 WEEKS laid an egg and just walked away, with no song or nothing , I knew she had been laying eggs for the last week i have seen her , so she was leaving the nest box when my barred rock Henryetta 2 weeks older was watching Bee Bee the wyandott leave the nest box and she started to sing the egg song for Bee Bee ...?...lol... and she kept on singing the egg song , UNTIL Bee Bee who was about 6 feet away by then , just stopped & looked at Henryetta , that was when she began to sing the egg song with Henryetta ....lol..... sooo wow that was corn fusing.....lol.. to see one hen tell the other hen to come on sing the egg song .....lol... could it be that the egg song is a learned behavior...???? or that maybe some chickens dont know the words...??? ....lol.... but who can tell..? geeezzz. it s like asking what came first the chicken or the egg, or who sang the first egg song ? ...lol...

I think they just have to be in the mood. Some days my girls sing like maniacs. Other days they barely make a peep lol

I heard my first egg song the other morning. No eggs yet, so I guess they were just getting in tune. And they were singing in my pumpkin patch, which has plenty of room now that they've broken in and killed all the pumpkins...

Our girlies did the same thing to our fall squashes... they got in there and well, squashed everything!

Mine figured out that they could bite off the blossoms and eat the young pumpkins out of the bases. When I bought them as little chicks, the farmer warned me that the breed (Chick Marley) needs to free-range almost exclusively. "Don't confine them or they'll become destructive".

he should have said "They'll be destructive no matter what you do" !

gosh sorry to hear about the lost pumpkins & squished squash,

guess what. ..I now have a second broody lol. I swear it must be contagious! I think hubby is giving up the battle though. I said I was going to give her eggs and he just said ok. Didn't ask how many and I didn't tell. I just gave her 6 lol. I'm just hoping nobody else goes broody. I don't need an entire second flock of chicks at the beginning of winter!
