So that would be more than 8xthe the horsepower at 1/30th.hp if the GQF is 1/250th for only about $20 more. Would just have to adapt the shaft

It would turn twice as fast... I haven't seen a GQF in action but 30 seconds to do the 180 degree would seem slow anyway. This would turn the eggs in 15 seconds, alot longer than if manually turned so I think it would work.


Would be nice to find someone here who has done this before. Thanks for the help guys!

I built a lot of these in the late 50s and early 60s. They were based on the Buckeye that I converted and were built to hold 320 eggs. The dimensions are based on the cutting of a 4X8 sheet of 3/4 Marine Plywood. The primary thermostat was mounted in the rear but controlled from the front. This gave a lot better control of temperature swings when the thermostats kicked off and on. I use a full width humidity pan which is top filled and controlled with the top and front vents. All my controls and readouts are front mounted so you can just glance at the unit and know what is going on instantly without standing on your head and trying to read a tiny thermometer mounted on the side of the incubator. This one is one of the last ones I built and is dated 1964. I've made some modifications since then, for instance the digital temperature and humidity readings with the probes, but essentially it is the same as when it was built and has run pretty much continually since it was put in service.

I just want to set as many eggs as I can. I currently have 142 Rhode Island Red, looking to have 1,000 birds or so total with various breeds.

I have 117 hens now. Purchased them from a large hatchery across country. I figure with 110 hens, 80 percent lay then I need setting room for 1,980 eggs, hatching space for 400.. and That is just for the RIR!

I hope to have 100 laying hens of RIR, Silver Laced Wyandottes , Black Australorps, Cornish rocks, Pearl-White Leghorn, and Silkies(blue, black, white). Also I'd like to get a few ducks and geese.



So what is the biggest incubator you've ever made?

I've got a new all digital 960 egg unit sitting in the box that I haven't unpacked yet. I'll probably get it out and set up the middle of February. I never actually built a large incubator. I built several hundred as I mentioned of the size shown. Where I lived for almost 50 years there was an abundance of old hatchery incubators for the taking. I used the shells and trays or built new ones and rewired them to suit myself. When the Ostrich craze hit I custom hatched Ostrich eggs for a few years with a converted 30,000 egg Lane.

I'm also going to be building a 300 egg hatcher from a Lyons Roll X that I have laying around. I will post pictures of construction details and dimensions as I go.

Well currently I am taking reservations for setting positions in my incubator(s) to fill any voids until I have my hens laying. Then I will sell baby chicks this may, and eggs that I don't have reserved sales of babies. I'm not really into raising pullets, I'll probably stick to the newborns and sell out my flock once a year after they aren't laying as well.

There are alot of pet chickens in my area(see atlanta pet chickens-the guy sells them straight from the hatchery for 2x what he pays for them, 100+ a week), and the farm supply stores just don't carry the best equipment so I may distribute that also. After calling around at the feed stores they just can't wait till I can bring them some chicks. Tractor Supply near where I live gets around 800 per day in the month of april and sells out every day. With the new legislation pertaining to the well being of birds(increased cage/floor space per bird, almost 3x as much), the prices have jumped considerably. If I can offer chicks at 40 cents a piece less I'm sure I'll sell every one I hatch.


I'd love to find another commercial incubator that will set 16,000 eggs and has a comparable hatching compartment... Every one I see they want 10 grand. Until then I need to get my automatic turner working on this one 8)

I was a field engineer for a testing company (well still am, I get a % of each contract and they don't have any work lined up) and I live in a rural area. There are 0 jobs out here and no way to sell your home with more than 2500+ foreclosures in my county. Just trying to buy a job~
