I missed it hatching!!! Lol I set my alarm to wake up every two hours....I was up at 2:30, still nothing new. Got up at 4:30, fluffy but all fluffed up and dry! I'm thrilled, lol but I really wanted to see one hatching. Four more left...none of them pipped, hoping for today. Tonight - no going to bed if there is a pip, lol.

I took her out of the incubator quickly and brought her to the brooder that was already warmed up. She is chirping her little head off. She is a black Japanese cochin X and she has feathered feet just like her Daddy

Photo coming in one minute...downloading now.

I'd like to say she is a she, lol but the comb on this one already....wow! Sigh...I love it anyways even though I can't keep it. Anyone want him?

Question: I have a 60 watt bulb in the brooder, is that enough? I have never had a hours old chick. The last hatch silkiechicken did and I got them when they were a week old. My other chicks were all from the hatchery. Since this one is alone and will be most of the day I think, I want to make sure she's warm enough. I'm already looking for a stuffed animals, but all my kids are older so we don't have them lying around anymore, lol.

Awesome!

Do you know the temp in there? I kept it at 99-100 under the light week one. I stuck a therm on the wall under the light and lowered it (the light) until it was just over 99.

I put down paper towels the first few days so they'd eat food instead of the shavings - I don't know from experience - I just saw that they were eating shavings and worried they wouldn't eat the food....I still put down newspaper everyday and sprinkle chick starter on it for them to scratch at.

No, I'm trying to find my thermometer...grrrrrr. It was just here....I think one of the cats took it off my desk so I need to go out to the garage and find the other one or head to the feed store when the open. I think I will go out and get the hotter bulb just in case. For right now, I have her on shavings. I've always used them and never had a problem. Plus her being the only one, I wanted her to have something to bury in. I will keep an eye though once she is up and moving around more. My broody Silkie hen, who is in the house too, hears and is going crazy lol. I'm waiting on eggs to put under her this week. I'm afraid to give her the baby though....

Heat bulb too hot....back to the 60 watt.

Oh it's gonna be a long day, lol. The little one thinks I'm its Momma and won't settle down unless I hold it in my hand under the light. Not that I mind...but
