Electro-net Fencing

Following are calculations I made to relate perimeter length to area. I assumed area was a square. Formulas indicated below table.

Lengths =number of 164’ units (limitations owing to fire risk)
Perimeter = lengths x 164’
Side = perimeter divided by 4, assume square. Circle would give slightly more area.
Area feet squared = side x side
Acres = area feet squared divided by 43560 square feet / acre

That's good info. It's been many years since geometry class for most of us. I bought an 82 foot run of fence for more than half the price of the 164 foot length, to enclose breeders or chicks or whatever, put it up and realized what a small area it created by itself. For my money make sure you buy the longer 164 foot lengths. I have stayed with the original 42 inch single spike net. I can handle it by myself, but would not want a version that is larger, heavier or more complicated. The double spike is interesting, but if the ground is really dry and hard, it seems to me that would be twice the hassle of putting two spikes in the ground instead of one. I have not had real hard ground since using the fence, if I did I might try watering the heck out of the new area before moving. Just a thought.

Most urbanites think that an acre of ground is half as big as Texas.

Then they are shocked to see how small an acre really is, except that is until they have to hand mow or cultivate an acre of crop land.

In that case an acre of land grows till it's as big as all of Texas.

An acre is very little, especially when dominated by cheat grass. I am trying to make it bigger by establishing legumes and patches of warm season grasses.

The table above was made to see relationship between paddock size and cost per unit area fenced in. For me the 8 length setup is optimal but will take some time to be realized. The larger area is also a pain to keep hot without using a herbicide to keep weeds down.

I would like to purchase an electro-net or similar product but have 2 questions. One, how do you create a gate for the fencing? I have young children who will collect the eggs and I don't want them to have to remove posts to get to the coop. Two, the fence will be pretty much permanent. How do I keep grass trim around fence if I don't want to spray roundup?

Thanks
