ou know..... emus can be very tame if they are raised with a lot of handling. BUT>>>be careful! Just like ostriches, they will kick forward if they are scared or defensive and those toes can really do some damage. But they don't kick just for the heck of it. They are also good for keeping dogs and other smaller predator types out of an enclosure. Ours will chase the dogs if they get in the pen. They get along with the chickens, so an argument for keeping them might be predator control! Just build them a corridor around your chicken house so they can stretch their legs and you will have happy emus and no foxes or stray dogs! They don't fly or jump high, so the fence only has to be 4 ft to keep them in and they can be in mesh, chain link or rails.
They are really funny to watch and they LOVE to play in the hose or sprinkler. Give them a kiddie pool and they will wallow and "swim"The feathers are really neat becasue each body feather is a double plume. They have the most beautiful blue skin on their haeds and necks.
The adults "boom". It's a low sound kind of like a pig's grunt, but you can "feel" it as well as hear it.
