Emu Hatch-a-long 2012

Ok.. FINALLY got those poor California eggs.. and guess what... one is broken!

Here they are:







Another one has a teeny nick out of the shell.. probably done when it was laid. I've had eggs with those hatch before so all I did was spray it down with Oxine then after that dried just put a dab of candle wax (unscented) over the nick.

Here are the weights:
Egg E (the pale one) 709 grams
Egg F 439 grams (the tiniest emu egg i have ever had!)
Egg G 528 grams

and the poor broken one at 465 grams

I know the broken one is going to be a bad egg.. even though the membrane wasn't broken the shell is dented pretty badly to the point where if you look carefully at the second pic of it you can see the membrane showing through.. I just had to put it on the scales to see what it weighed..

I'm considering spritzing it with some oxine as well and doing a patch job with wax.. but I know that would be a futile attempt (and hoping for a miracle) since bacteria has had plenty of time to get in there and set up home.

Unfortunately breakage happens all too often with shipped eggs. So far this is the first emu egg that has arrived broken, and I have received several shipments of them over the past year.. I have gotten several which had been scrambled. But unfortunately you can't tell that until you blow out the contents after they don't hatch.

An unfertile egg (but not scrambled) will blow out with a definite white and yolk..
A scrambled one looks just like that..just runny yellowish fluid.. no discernible white or yolk.. just a mix of the two (usually blended quite well)
Blood rings will show some blood in the mix when you blow them out.
Then there is the rare odd egg like Raptor had where there's no yolk at all
And of course the yummy rotten ones which blow out in an array of greenish greys (and other lovely colors) and smell like sulphur!

Not looking forward to blowing out my #1 Egg..But I suppose that being day 51 and also no wigglin its a dud..It was smaller then the rest as well as an odd shaped one..Must have been the first egg laid. I am lucky in the fact that my nieghbor has the eggs, so straight outta the ____ into the incubator lol

But i cheat and use a little hand bellows (picture of it is in the link in my signature)

Oh I didn't think of using a bellows, I've got a little one I made last year for the wood burning stove. Ended up just using a little syringe.

A bicycle pump with a long needle works too.. but it's rather messy.. I prefer the little plastic bellows i use because I can also fill it with water to wash out the insides of the egg after I make that little pin hole

if you decide to go the bicycle pump route an easy way is to drill 2 holes.. insert the needle into the top hole and use a little clay or plumbers putty around it to make a seal.. so the egg yolk and white will be forced out the bottom hole like i said it's quite messy.. and I think the other way is a bit more effective and easier
