ENDED Coop Page Contest 2011 - Win BYC Store Gift Certificate

Here is our coop page.

We turned our garden shed into a coop and tried to use all 'found' or recycled materials. The nesting boxes were benches that weren't being used and the the majority of the materials we did buy were bought at our local habitat for humanity restore. We even recycled our old paint to custom make our own colors.
Can't wait for the girls to move in, although it's going to be awhile, they are only 6 days old

Hey Y'all,
I am in Ridgeway, SC and wanted to make a coop that complimented our log home in the woods, so we built our girls their very own log chicken coop. Once we picked a spot for the coop, we had to thin the trees on the building site and then we used those trees to build the coop with. How green is that? It's been a very economical coop in that most everything we needed for the coop was grown on the land or was left over from the construction of our home. I estaimate I have about $400 in the coop and the run, mostly in deck screws, nails, staples, and chicken wire. Also, recognizing chicken wire is not full-proof in keeping out every predator, I have invested in Solar Nite Eyes to place around the coop (http://www.solarniteeyes.com/).

Some of you may notice that I posted my coop link near the end of the last coop competition, but after checking with Niffty-Chicken it was discooverd that my coop design was accidently skipped and so he ask me to resubmit it for this competition. So, please checkout my Log Chicken Coop at https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=88683.

Thanks!

We are Almost done! Just adding the finishing touches.. Only if I can get myself to stop reading in here and keep getting ideas,, Lmao..
I'm addicted to BYC....

Hehe, actaully its been fun, and we managed to get all the kids involved and the dogs....Would do it all over again..

The rock border goes all around the coop on 4 sides as my predetor protector. The black soil patches are gardens, the big one for squash and the small for cucumbers. Eventually the big window wall will be covered with Climantis and flowers on 2 other sides.

I'm hoping I can keep te grass growing with my rotating screen on the ground but I'm not sure I can keep up with their appetite for greens

The small yellow door at the bottom is my roost clean out door, works like a charm with little effort, no mess. I got the idea about 35 years ago from a Government Agricultural brochure when I last rased chickens. I was lining it with shavings but now I'm using newsprint. All of it goes into the compost bin.

My goal before I started rasing chickens again was that it had to be easy, fun and my birds had to be happy and comfortable. I think I have achieved my goal.

I have the sand box inside so as not to worry about it getting wet and they use it regularly to bath and for fine grit.

This is their first introduction to a spinach/pasta dish, it took a few minutes to decide whether or not they should eat it. They are cautious for sure.

Here they are checking out my observation seat. I like to sit inside the run where the mosquitoes don't have a chance of survival making it the most comfortable place to observe.

The coop is completely insulated as we're in a cold zone up here in Eastern Ontario Canada. And the coop is surrounded by shade for the summer. It couldn't have turned out any better. We're very pleased, chickens included.

I just LOVE the "Mother Cluckers" coop!!! What an awesome design, well thought out, and very pretty too! Love the roost clean out trap door! I want to add one of those to my coop, thanks for the great idea! And we got a kick out of what you named it, too!
