English Shepherd as Poultry Guardian

We lost a hen to a stray tom cat last week...he made the mistake of coming back for another one the next day. He wont be a threat in the future.
We may add a hot wire but we have this tom on video scaling a 4ft fence and short of razor wire topping I don't think he would have been deterred.

I am able to keep cats out by adjusting gaps in fencing just a little. Three were coming into feed off carcass set out for owl when fence was off. When power brought back up cats started walking ways to find gap they could get through. Then I pushed wire a little closer to ground so they could not get through. Cats not going in now unless they walk almost all the way to other side of poultry yard. Going to shut down for a while. Cats may be need to help manage mice. Owl and bullfrog not up to task.

We had coyotes up behind the house last night. Yipping and howling and calling to each other and everything. Heard them earlier in the night around 11 or midnight or whatever and then I heard them at about 3am and they went on for probably at least 10 minutes but then they finally shut up. Chickens woudn’t come out this morning. I am sure they heard them. They were in the woods directly behind the chicken coop. We have NEVER in 6 1/2 years had them that close or really remember seeing more than maybe one occasionally but without Gator they are coming back. :( We had to put Gator down 2 days after Christmas. I don’t know if you know about Gator but he was our Black Lab/Great Pyrenees mix. He had an autoimmune disorder and started declining for about a year and a half up till he finally had to be put down and towards the end he started not being able to do his job properly and didn’t always notice everything, like he missed one fox (thankfully the birds were in the run) and missed delivery people (he used to hate them), etc. because he was sick and I think going a little deaf, but anyway, long story short, even if he didn’t always notice everything, he would still go outside and bark daily and pee on stuff, etc. so they knew he was still here and stayed away but now with him gone, it’s like they know and are back in full force. Going to need to be extra careful about not letting the cat out. Oh and Gator was a pet and lived inside but was protective of the home/property, car, us, etc. and when we got the chickens, he took protecting them seriously do and always alerted us, when he was in his prime, to anything trying to break in or bothering them. Usually a pesky fox. And if he heard any coyotes, he would go ballistic and I am sure they could hear him through the glass but we would also occasionally let him out at night to run off whatever was outside. It seemed to work. But now they are back. :(

Four days into estrus with Hun. She had a gentleman caller that could not get past outer perimeter to barn. Camera in barn did not pick him up, or any predator for that matter. Hun is keeping all bad guys out, even owl it appears as it has not come back since she was penned for days ago. Hun barks and growls at any disturbance. No less than eight game pullets and hens are now free-range full time as they are safe at night. They roost in a semi-circle along top rails of her pen. The also come down to hang with her as they try to check out her feed. She does not appear to be sharing.

The caller is at least part lab and knows to steer clear of me.

Ben currently penned as well because he can get past perimeter and go right up to Hun's pen. Another female dog may be coming into heat elsewhere so will keep my dog out of that mix.

Once it starts, 2 times a year. We used to have pens specifically for females in heat which was needed when you might have as many a 10. Only one not nearly as bad but you really have be a dog juggler when it happens. I have even been able to let Hun and Ben together without successful humping, but you got to be quick saying no. Next heat that system will not work.

We had a rank change yesterday morning. Hun usurped Lucy. Lucy taking it well and she is still the smart dog.

Somebody has a female dog in heat, or a female Coyote is coming in too heat. Either way she needs to be penned up as causing Ben all sorts of issues.

Dogs got another raccoon while I was out of town. This one a little larger and left next to first.

Weather last night involved a lot of wind with some in excess of 50 mph. Dogs did not like it and I put kids in basement. There is damage.
