Expectant parent club! Where the pregnant people hang out.

Trying not to freak out here!

So the school nurse called me and said that my 6 yo son was in her office and he has a white lacey rash. She said it "could be" fifths disease and that since I'm pregnant it could be dangerous to the baby!

I've never even heard of fifth disease!

Then she said she doesn't think it's an emergency, and IF it is fifths disease he's no longer contagious since he has the rash. That they are only contagious before the rash shows up, but you won't know if a child has it UNTIL the rash shows up.

So now, tomorrow, when I go for my next appt. I have to tell my O.B. that I MAY have been exposed to Fifths disease, which means more bloodwork for me, and possibly frequent ultrasounds to monitor fetal growth.

ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh and this school nurse calls over EVERYTHING even if my kids' break wind crossways.

The info I can find on it says there's usually a bright red rash on the face before the "lacy" rash...did you see that on your son at all? Also, it says that it doesn't cause birth defects. The complication that can occur is rare and can be treated with blood transfusions. I would mention it to your doctor to be safe, but I'm sure you'll be fine.

Fifth's disease (aka Parvovirus B19) is not really a disease, just an illness, just like how Chicken Pox is an illness. Even though it's a strain of Parvovirus, it's not the same kind that dogs gets. Some if he does have it, he didn't get it from the dog.

Here is more info:
http://kidshealth.org/parent/infections/bacterial_viral/fifth.html
"Fifth disease begins with a low-grade fever, headache, and mild cold-like symptoms (a stuffy or runny nose). These symptoms pass, and the illness seems to be gone until a rash appears a few days later.

The bright red rash usually begins on the face. Several days later, the rash spreads and red blotches (usually lighter in color) extend down to the trunk, arms, and legs. The rash usually spares the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. As the centers of the blotches begin to clear, the rash takes on a lacy net-like appearance. Kids younger than 10 years old are most likely to get the rash."

"Parvovirus B19 infection during pregnancy may cause problems for the fetus. Some fetuses may develop severe anemia if the mother is infected while pregnant — especially if the infection occurs during the first half of the pregnancy. In some cases, this anemia is so severe that the fetus doesn't survive. Fortunately, about half of all pregnant women are immune due to a previous infection with parvovirus. Serious problems occur in less than 5% of women who become infected during pregnancy."

My son has had none of those symptoms. and the nurse said the rash is on his arms and legs. So maybe it's not that.

I'm planning the menu for my baby shower...got my invitations ordered last night....

I decided on doing a brunch for the shower--so I could have it at 10:30am until whenever....it's just so hard because it will be 100 degrees and if we had it in the evening--we'd have to have more food and there would be more bugs.

But mid-day would be too hot...I am planning on having it outside...

I think with the big tent and some other shady spots, we'll be okay??? I have misters, too....

Oh and here is what I have so far for the brunch menu:

Fresh fruit (probably bananas, oranges, strawberries, blueberries and kiwi?)

Bagels & cream cheese (maybe two flavors of bagels & two of cream cheese?)

A couple breakfast casseroles http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Brunch-Strata/Detail.aspx and another one?

I was thinking croissants, too....no muffins since there will be cake...

And then coffee, (iced & hot), tea, and various kinds of juice....

What else???

Sounds great to me! How about some watermelon, maybe some finger veggies like baby carrots, sugar peas, broccoli florets? LOVE the croissants idea too, excellent choice!

You might consider 2 buckets of ice, one for people to put ice in their drinks, and one to put bottled water in (and any other drinks like juice pouches, or any other packaged drinks). The misters will go a long way to keeping things cool too.

I am so happy for you! Sounds like your baby shower is going to be really nice and fun! Are you planing on doing games?
