. So basically they saw something with the baby's heart, which may be a marker for Downs? Or am I missunderstanding?

I am praying for you all, as well! I am slow at decifering technical jargon.. But from what I could tell, it basically says that something iffy is going on, but that it more than likely isn't going to be a big deal at all. Sort of like what happened with SpringChickens daughter. It's there, but it isn't going to be a real issue or even noticable for that matter.. That's what I got from it...

I was a blubbering mess for about an hour at work this morning.

The good thing is the white spot on her heart (left ventricle) is the ONLY thing they found wrong (there are 20 of these so-called “soft-markers” for DS) and this is only one of 20 possible "soft markers." At least at this point without doing the Level 2 ultrasound, yet.

Other things they look for are the opening/closing of the hands, a nasal bone (ridge), flat back of the head, AV heart canal defects, folds on the back of the neck, shortened limbs & fingers, low fetal heart rate etc.

We did see the baby opening & closing her fists. Her heart rate was 138 bpm

They say 5 or more of these markers put you at “increased risk” for DS.

A “score” of 7 or more of these combined markers is almost "high risk."

Each marker they DO find increases the risk of DS by a % (that percentage varies website to website).

I also read that 4-5% of all normal pregnancies have this show up on ultrasound. A certain % of those will resolve themselves by 30 weeks, another percentage are born with a heart defect but no DS and yet another % of those have the abnormality at birth but it doesn’t present any issues with anything for the life of the child.

I am leaning towards it will resolve on its own or it’s some sort of heart thing and not related to DS —especially since I had the “triple screen” done and my risk factors for DS genetically were 1 in 13,000 and my age-related risk factor is 1 in 690 and baby has only one of 20 of these “soft-markers” as of yet.

I will ask lots of questions of my doctor on Tuesday and see what she says…I am thinking of asking for an amino or CVS to be done just to rule that out ahead of time...I don't think I'll be able to sleep or eat until the end of the month, waiting for that next ultra sound.

I love the title! That would be me too... From these 2 pages, there really is a small chance of it being nothing more than just a calcium deposit. I would be willing to bet everything is fine! And I'm not a betting person.

Hope your next ultrasound goes well - I wouldn't stress about it too much! The echogenic focus is one of the softest markers for DS there is. As I said earlier, my daughter had one as well on her ultrasound, and she came out 100% healthy. (Although I did stress about it for a while).

Was she measuring on time or ahead? Babies who are measuring ahead are even less likely to be DS babies (they tend to have shorter limbs especially)

Didn't you say you did a quad screen or something similar and got really good results? If so, that's ANOTHER reason not to worry. I know it's not easy, but I think you (and your baby) will be just fine. Lots of hugs

@ Springchickens:

They didn't say how she was measuring.

All I know is it says 19w1d on the top of my ultrasound....usually they do this one at 20 to 22 weeks but I was too impatient and wanted it done a little earlier.

Well, the nurse I spoke to on the phone told me that the white spot on her left ventricle was the ONLY thing they found that was of "not right." So everything else must have been okay?

If they didn't mention anything else then they didn't see any other warning signs/anything wrong. And don't worry too much at this point.

There's usually more than one thing that can cause positive test results and the spot could be nothing. I had a false positive for spina bifita on my last pregnancy and that was a blood test; suppost to be very accurate. Nothing is final/definate until the baby is born, especially with things like DS. For that matter there are still people who are told the wrong gender right up to delivery. And that's certainly something larger than a spot.
