Experienced Trader Joe hatchers

I'm not sure about natural broody hens and their work, but really, don't worry about how long you let them settle, I think it's more important if you got some eggs in the mail. They've probably just been sitting in the cooler at the store for a while anyway, so if the air sacks are jostled, they've probably settled as much as they're gonna. It's just most important to get them to room temperature, then incubate, brood on 'em (termanology ?? LOL)

Good luck, just finished day 14 on mine and candled, and they were all still wiggly little things! Have my fingers crossed that they all come through! My husband keep saying "don't count your chickens before they hatch" to me LOL. 'cause I keep count'in em! I keep saying... hope all 6 eggs hatch..., I hope at least 3 will be hens, maybe I'll get lucky and have 4??? LOL

im planning on candling and moving them and mom to a separate brooding box on day 14
all my husband cares about is making sure we dont keep any cockerels - we'll see

I actually called our local Trader Joe's and asked if they had fertile eggs.

He was dumbfounded ~ and then I was put on hold for 10 minutes. A girl came on the line and said "we absolutely do not sell fertile eggs".

A waste of my minutes, she probably has no clue anyway

Unfortunately, I understand the Trader Joe's farther from us crazy "healthfood" nuts (or just crazy) in California you are, the less likely TJ's will have them. Like only as far away as Nevada, Arizona, etc (not sure about up north, but I think people In Oregon and Washington have said they found 'em?). Your best bet would be a health food store or Whole foods tends to have them? Good luck!

Believe it! When I candled eggs the first time, I was SO shocked to see the red spider-like veins that I nearly dropped the egg!

By the way, these little guys came out of store bought eggs. My Buff Orpington sat on them. Both of the white Leghorns were cockerels, unfortunately and were given away. Good Luck with yours!

he has grown fond of some of our girls but CANNOT get over
the turkens - their necks send him running

As Linda said, the Trader Joe's here sells fertile eggs. They also sell cage free eggs and regular commercial eggs, both brown and white. They are all side by side in the same case, you just have to choose what you want.



I now have five hatched and one more zipping.

I live in thousand oaks, CA and have a whole foods and trader joes in this city. Do trader joes and whole foods sell fertile chicken eggs out here? Also what kind of chickens hatch?

I also bought a dozen eggs from a Food Co-op. They weren't listed as fertile, just Free Range. I took my chances they had a rooster with their hens. I had one egg hatch, it was a Black Copper Marans.
