Hi,
One of our 7 chickens seems to be very sick. She is a white laying chicken, I do not know the breed of the chicken. She is almost certainly a mix breed. Born in April 2021.She is a big chicken.
The last couple of days I noticed she was lethargic, eyes closing on the roost during day. It has been extremely cold here the last few days with nights getting to -33 C. So I thought her napping during the day was not that weird because the girls were mostly standing on the roosts all day anyways.
However today clearly something is very wrong. She is extremely lethargic. She was laying on the coop floor and not moving. Normally she does not like to be picked up or handled and will try and run away. She did not move at all. When in my hands she was completely still where normally she would wiggle. I sat her down outside and tossed some food around and she did join the other chickens and ate some. That is all I am aware of her eating today. I have not seen her drink (she may have I was not out all day with her). At night she did not move to roost.
I have brought her inside the house. Her vent looks pretty normal , picture attached. . The skin on her bum area and above vent (pic attached) is extremely red. I tried to check her abdomen for a bound egg and I thought I felt something hard. I honestly am not sure it wasn't just her bones though……. I am not very familiar with chicken anatomy.
She was given a epsom soak on her vent area and then vent massaged with coconut oils.
After this she has a green poo (not an average poo for her) *picture attached.
Her crop tonight feels fully and squishy. I will check in morning to see if empty.
Over the last few weeks she has been losing feathers overnight. I assume one of the other ladies is pulling her feathers (I thought due to winter boredom and just meanness). The feathers from the back her neck were almost all pulled out as well as most of her large tail feathers. One day I saw a blood smear on ger feathers. I could not find wound but in generally the feathers are pulled clean out. Feathers are starting to grow back and in the last few days a new chicken is being targeted.
Earlier this year she was also sick. She was somewhat lethargic and was not eating much. She did eat scrambled eggs. After two days she perked back up and was fine again. During this time her comb changed . It used to be huge and floppy. Now it is small and pale. It has been like that for a fews months.Otherwise normal.
Other birds seem fine.
Bedding is pine shavings.
I have put her in house inside a carrier over night. She has water with applecider vinegar and 8 pellets of food mixed with calcium.
I have no idea what the issue is. egg bound, infection, parasites?? I am looking for any advice, help on diagnoisis or treatment suggestions. I can go to the store tomorrow to buy some sort of medication for her.
