Thanks! I'm hoping this is a good sign, but you never know. I see a lot
Of threads where the poster thinks their bird is doing well and then we hear a few days later that it died. So I'm trying really hard to not get my hopes up...

I'm so happy his eyes are doing better! I've been following this topic and just think he's a very brave boy. I think he's about the most awesome looking roo I've ever seen. I love how dark his skin is. Can I ask where you got him from?

Thank you very much. Come back and tell me what you thinknof the coryza though. This is beyond and abcess. One eye swollen shut then the other a day later? White fluid comin out of eye? Nasal discharge? I don't know

This is only my thoughts on it......but I think it's infection from a dirty ole' racoon claw or bite. Chicken skin is so thin, and there's no muscle to speak of in their heads and necks. Infections normally swell up the muscles tissues and the fat in an animal. With a chicken there IS no muscle or fat in their heads. So it's going to swell up what skin is there and look really bad. The timing is just too much of a coincidence, in my opinion, for it to be anything except secondary infection from the racoon attack.
Better safe than sorry but don't worry yourself sick about what might or might not happen. He's separated right now so just keep it up taking care of him. He needs good old fashioned antibiotics like amoxicillon or penicillon. Don't you have a feed store or tractor supply store anywhere near you?

Oops, I'm sorry. I should've read ahead and I'd have seen the updates. I'm so glad! Go Petey!
I'm new to chickens......what kind of chicken is he? I talked to someone earlier on here about Naked Necks, is that what he is? I thought he was a Silkie that got his feathers/hair pulled out by the coon. He's a way cool looking bird!

it sounds like petey is doing better. you stated puss was draining from his eyes. Makes you wonder if he has some sort of subcutaneus infection that is trying to find a spot to drain. Is the skin still warm to the touch? You can try a wet warm compress...a wash cloth or gauze in warm water and gently press on his exposed head skin. He will probably think he's getting a sponge bath! It might help break up and drain what's in there.

The skin all over his body is very hot to the touch. I tried the warm compress this morning, so we will see how it goes. His eyes did not ooze this morning like they have been, but were still swollen and crusted shut. He is losing an alarming amount of weigh despite all that he's eating and I fear for that. As far as the infection goes, I think I was biddin too much on the one shot of penicillin. Hopefully today's and tomorrows shot will help more....

Swelling has gone down on the left side of his face but has gone way up in his right side. It looks like his skin is stretched to capacity. What do I do??? I need to get that swelling down! We are on day four.
