Facebook BackYardChickens Group - Master Facebooker Needed !

Sorry I wasn't more specific, I'll make this simple:

The Goal: Spread the word about BYC

More detail: Remember, we want to get a chicken in every yard... the best way to do this is for people to tell their friends about how cool it is to raise chickens. One of the best / easiest ways to do this is through a social network.

Social networks are a fantastic way to spread the word about something that is wonderful. BYC is wonderful and Facebook is one of the biggest social networks.

Important Note: The purpose of a BYC Facebook page (or even a BYC MySpace Page) would NOT be to send people already on BYC to that site, but to send people from those places here! So, don't fret those of you who don't know about / or like Facebook or Myspace because you won't need to know or do a single thing different from what you're already doing. We're just trying to find more smart ways to get our feathered friends into more backyards!

I am very familiar with facebook.....I have just under 50 friends right now........but I've only started adding friends in the last month or so. I would be happy to volunteer........I was just trying to find some chicken sites on the facebook page yesterday actually! I'll PM you my info!

I vote no to a BYC myspace and facebook
this is a forum, we have a chat room I think that the forum and chat room are enough

yeah i dont understand y people would say no.. its NOT another forum.. its more like an ADD .. just a page describing what byc is and in a place where there are ALOT of people.. its not something that byc people have to read, just like a shout out " HEY COME CHECK OUT BYC"!!!

Making a group on Facebook is incredibly easy. All you do is click on "Groups" and "start your own group" or something like that. Then you fill in the fields and pick a category.

For a lot of non-Facebook people who are wondering, why?! Sometimes people join a Facebook group just to show their friends on Facebook what their interests are. Some groups are like that. It's not a replacement for a forum at all. It's also a way for people to connect a little bit more IRL, but still with the computer.

I won't get too much into why I think FB is better than MySpace here, but it involves an overabundance of ugly web design and too much spam.

BTW, there are two Facebook groups I belong to involving chickens. One is called "CHICKENS!" and the other is called "Chickens make fantastic pets."

I don't spend a lot of time on FaceBook, but I do maintain a FB page, and have 169 friends right now, mostly other mom-bloggers. I use it as a kind of "aggregator" of all my friends' online activity, which I feel is FaceBook's biggest draw. I'd be happy to help in any way I can.

You could join a FB BYC group, and then send invitations to everyone on YOUR friends list who you think might be interested (I know there are a ton of chicken-keepers among my friends who are not here at BYC), and thereby direct more people here. Just a couple of weeks ago, a comment was left on my blog, asking if I was thinking of putting together a "chicken bloggers' website." So yeah, I think the idea has merit.

As far as MySpace, I don't see why it would need to be an either/or situation. Someone could start a BYC MySpace page, which would probably be a draw to young people. Most of my peers prefer FaceBook, by a huge margin. MySpace pages tend to be busy, slightly garish (or at least visually "noisy"), and not exactly intuitive to navigate. FaceBook, while not my favorite thing in the world (I hate all the extra apps where people bombard you with invites), is clean, simple, and easily navigable for anyone. It's not full of gaudy flash animation and blinkies, etc.

Anyway, like I say, I'd be happy to do anything I can to help, though I hardly consider myself a "master." My page is here: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=782173477

BYC
could also consider having a Twitter stream...just a thought.

Some really great ideas, thanks everyone!

My wife pointed out that someone took one of the BYC bumper stickers and made it a "piece of flair" and there are already like 35 people using it! Anybody know who made the flair so we can thank them?
