Fallen Feathers -A Chicken Roleplay

The jungle was in a strange vigil. Watching. Watching what? Prey being hunted? Are we the only ones who don't see what's happening?
Apart from a shrill alarm call, the world was strangely silent. Even the insects, who usually had so much to say, were taciturn. Turtle slowly backed up against Amber (@Thing2LovesChickens ), since inquisitive Daybreak (@danceswithronin ) wasn't exactly being a comforting companion. Or maybe it was because he had a major crush on the little hen. He stepped forward a bit to give her some personal space.
"Hello?" he asked. Perhaps he would find some feeling of safety from the diction of his own hoarse voice.
"Hey, Robin? Do you know where we're going?"
Chickens! Tiny cockerels, no less! Why, even the most benevolent bush was giving him a fright!
Turtle smoothed his hackles, and turned his head toward the direction of the two stumbling youths. "Robin? Frosty? What brought you here? To the jungle of all places!" The real question I should be asking is why am I here?

(Thanks! I was waiting for a moment to insert myself!)

Amber glanced up at him as he came closer, then glanced away into the shadowy forest, embarrassed. But embarrassed in a good way. Maybe shy was a better word. Then she heard voices and froze, lifting her head as Turtle spoke and moved forward. “Frosty and Robin are here?” She asked, following him. Why would they be here? They won’t leave the glade for anything!
Robin stumbled out of a bush abruptly, as if summoned. He looked Turtle up and down. "You did," he answered flatly.
Frosty popped out behind him. To answer Amber, he chirped, "Apparently. Where is 'here', anyway?"

“I don’t actually know!” She responded, tipping her head to the side. “We’re kinda lost, I think.” Scanning the surrounding jungle, all she saw were more trees and undergrowth that disappeared into the shadows they cast.

Turtle cast Frosty an inquisitive glance. "Well, if you found us, maybe we aren't so lost. All we have to do is go southeast, supposing..." He glanced at the sky. The sun, high in the sky, was barely visible through the thick canopy. Well, it's about noon, and I have no idea how to gauge my direction.

"Are you saying... we're double lost!" Frosty chirped. He sat down a root, dejected. "Robin!"
Robin turned to look at him. He had been staring into space. "Huh?"
"Tell my mate... wait, I don't have one.. tell my beetle collection I love them!" He dramatically fell back, landing in a bush.

Turtle rolled his eyes. It couldn’t be that hopeless. Oh wait, yes it could. They had no food or water, without a decent survivalist among them (even the cockerels who weren’t sprawled in a bush were less than six months old), they were lost in the forest that could be swarming with things that wanted to eat them...
He turned his eyes pleadingly towards Amber.
Couldn’t she bless him with just a little of her optimism?
But all eyes were on him, even though he avoided attention like the plague. Of course, he was the oldest.
“Well, it’s not worth waiting to die right here, stuck here in the forest. If we keep going in one direction, we’re certain to hit the coast, or water. If we die, at least we’ll die having known we tried,” he offered reasonably.

Frosty popped out of the bush. "I know! You can eat me. I won't survive long anyway." He stretched his wings. "Begin the feast! Robin?"
Robin was watching the undergrowth suspiciously. The feathers behind his comb were standing up in fear.

Turtle narrowed his eyes and stared at the undergrowth with as much intensity as the little orange spotted cockerel.
Were they about to meet their first predator? Was one of them about to become lunch?
The bush moved slightly, and Turtle flinched backwards.

“What’s that thing where moss grows on one side of a tree? Doesn’t it only grow on the east side or somethi-” Amber turned around and froze at the sight of the cockerels staring nervously into the bushes, stopping mid sentence. Trying to be brave, she fluffed up her feathers defensively. “Who’s there?” She called out, the sound breaking the uneasy stillness as she silently wished she was tall enough to see over the bushes.

Silence. Turtle couldn’t see anything in the crowded shrubbery. It couldn’t be very big then, a rodent maybe. He could feel himself beginning to relax, but he kept his eyes trained on the bush.
SNAP! Turtle had barely the time to react, all he could do was raise his hackles as something slinky and sharp-nosed lept towards Frosty’s skinny neck. His feigned handicap had attracted a predator.
A mongoose! His first instinct was to run, but Frosty was in danger! He lept towards the animal.

Amber let out a frightened squawk and jumped back as a mongoose leapt out of the bushes, her hackles fluffed from the surprise. Then she recovered herself and flew aggressively at the attacker, letting out a yell to boost her morale. “Die, vile creature!” She stabbed at it with her beak. “Stay away from my friends!”
