I just read.more of the thread, and realized that my Question may seem insensitive based on all you are going through right now. I am so sorry to hear about the potential eviction, loss of your birds, the cold winter, etc. my thoughts and prayers are with you.Took the chicks off heat now that they're mostly feathered. I'm also watching their feed more since when I cleaned the brooder (aka my bathtub) there was more food than bedding!!! Well, they can fully empty their bowl AND the dropped and scattered food now.
I'm so mean.
Oh gosh Wind, we all have missed you SO much!!It's been a bit over a month... Sorry I haven't been checking in. I'll try to be a bit more active.
A lot has happened in the last month. My car was deemed irreparable so that was one more added stress on me. I have to admit, I was close to calling it quits. But I still have critters to care for. If less than before. Guess the only 'good' thing is that I now have a bit more money without having to feed all those Muscovy.
There is still kindness in the world. A special person saw my plight and sent me enough money to purchase a car. They are part of my guild for a game I play, although we'd barely spoken before. But they'd been in the same situation before and wanted to help.
I still don't know what's going on with the house. On top of that, I am also worrying about having my power cut off at the start of May, as of course my daughter hasn't been paying that, either. The rescheduled hearing for the eviction is at the end of April.
The first batch of chicks has been sold. I have many more going to auction on Saturday, as well as the remaining OEGB. And more eggs in the incubator due to hatch in just over 2 weeks (just in time for the 'local' small livestock sale).
I had five Brahma eggs hatch. I am going to keep them for now. If need be, I know I can sell them (many people interested in them), but it just hurt too much when my Gentle Giants were sold.
Right now, apart from chicks and rabbits, I have nine ducks left (six regular quackers, and three Call drakes), three bantam Cochin, three Chantecler, three BYM (including Rudy the Lone Chick, who is still inside and currently giving me about two eggs every three days), and the Lemon Blue OEGB trio. Those OEGB will also be going to auction. Oh, and the one remaining Silver Duckwing hen from my original OEGB. She's staying, and I will pick out a chick to stay with her. She's been through a lot here and I don't know her age, but she's gentle and sweet.
That's about it. I'm in a state of limbo, stressed out to the point of barely sleeping. I'm also in constant physical pain since we got hit with two massive snow storms back in February and the resulting shovelling I had to do. It's not going away and I should see a doctor but I just don't have the energy or will to call for an appointment.
Hope you are all doing well.![]()
It’s great to hear from you! What a blessing that someone helped you with a car. But what a bummer you’re in terrible pain. I was in terrible pain last week with what I think is a bone infection in my neck due to a dental problem from avoiding the dentist due to lack of insurance and anxiety over dentists… but I figured out how to use Teladoc and got some antibiotics prescribed. I’m just telling you this in case it might be something you could try? Perhaps instead of visiting a Dr you could try using a Teladoc? It's been a bit over a month... Sorry I haven't been checking in. I'll try to be a bit more active.

I totally agree with the rabbits. The quail too. Most of the remaining birds went to auction yesterday. The only OEGB I have left is my old Silver Duckwing hen (who after spending the winter outside went into cold shock after temps dropped ridiculously last week; she's inside now and recovered). I have the last of the OEGB eggs in the incubator and *may* hold back one to be a companion to her.
I culled the Chantecler rooster. He had gotten progressively aggressive and late last week when I was putting them to bed, he attacked hard enough to break the skin on my shin *through my pants*! That was the last straw. Next morning was taken care of. I've never had such an aggressive roo before, and it's also not typical of the breed. Still have some of his eggs in the incubator, and one more batch to go after this one hatches in 10 days.
I was going to sell the Brahma chicks I hatched out, but couldn't do it. I miss their parents so much! So, even though I still don't know what's going on, I kept them. And added three more from the auction...
Another thing I'm not compromising on is the rabbits. Since they are quiet and don't need too much space, I will do all I can to keep them. I may also have bought two more does at the auction...
And the final thing I got at auction was a dozen quail hatching eggs. Again, they are a species that can easily be kept in a small space, plus they mature quickly so turnaround will be good. I'm planning on using them as food for the dogs and cats for the most part.
So, down to 9 adult chickens in two pens (including the two house chickens), 6 regular Quackers, plus three Call drakes.
