Falling Down Heights, my daily life

Finally 'warming' up. Although the wind chill is still bad. It's -9 right now, feels like -14. Beats the -30!!

Going to get better as the week goes on, with expected 0 on Sunday! I may wear a bikini! 🤣

Have a total of 28 baby bunnies, including the ones born a few days ago. Not all of them come from my rabbits, but my friend and I have pretty much decided that we're splitting them 50/50, no matter the parentage. More does are due in a few days, and then a few more next week. Glad it's not me dealing with all of those, lol!!!

One litter I'm really looking forward to is next week. I hope to make steps forward towards having tri-coloured rabbits with this one. Like this:

I think there is a breeder north of here that raises them. I always stuck to the 'broken' blacks and lilacs - lots of fun with them. Good dual purpose rabbits. Most people don't know this.

Tri Standard Rexes??

The fun in making the tricolours is that you need a specific combination of genes to get them, *plus* a specific type of broken for good markings. Blanket/booted brokens are preferred, and you need to have Harlequin.

I also love red rabbits, so working on those, too. None so far in this bunch, but like I said, fingers crossed for the one that's due next week!

As for the rabbits I have here, I'm going to test my chinchilla doe to see if she carries the non-extension (e) gene that produces reds with my black buck who is split for it.

I'm gonna be having fun this Spring. :)

That all depends on how cooperative the hidden and non hidden genes are, lol! I have the basics, it's just putting them all together which could be one generation, or five. At least a rabbit generation can be every six months.

Well let’s hope it’ll be one!

Is it Spring yet??!! This weather is driving me nuts!

I managed to get the rabbit cages cleaned out on Tuesday, when it was just above freezing.

Had more babies born this week. These are full Standard Rex:

Eight little squirmies. Looks to be 2x black, 3x blue, 2x blue otter, and 1x lilac otter. They were just out of the nestbox here so my friend could clean it of any afterbirth.

Still awaiting the arrival of two more litters Any Time Now. Including the highly anticipated litter that I'm hoping will progress my breeding plans.

Lost three kits this week, reasons unknown. It was from my Belgian Hare/Tan cross. Hope not to lose any more. Of the remaining six, there's only one male and I *need* him. They were just over a week old, and their eyes hadn't opened yet.

That sounds like a lot!
When you consider that rabbits have eight nipples, a little bit. Most rabbits can handle ten babies although they may not get fed as much. My Flemish Giant doe had ten live kits that made it to weaning. One of my mixed breeds had nine, and although two of them were a bit scrawny they all made it to weaning also.

Preferably, you have two or more does with kits close in age so you can foster if need be.

But as per my previous post, three of them were found dead in the nestbox yesterday. :( They weren't underfed, so don't know why they died.

Interesting. I have never kept rabbits. But years ago I had Guinea-Pigs and they only have two nipples so multiple births are a bit of a rarity.
