I'm thinking that there is probably some attitude adjusting going on in those breeding pens. If a rooster (or hen) attacks and injures a worker, that's a Workman's Comp issue - and can get VERY expensive. Nasty attitudes probably don't even end up in a stew pot ... they likely go straight to the trash!I’ve found that my hatchery bought birds have sweet attitudes. I haven’t bought hatchery Rhode Island Reds, Sex Links, or Barred Plymouth Rocks which I hear have some bad attitudes.
Thank you! I did not breed her, I raised her and 6 other pullets (and a lot of cockerels I stupidly culled too early). She's from a breeder close to me that has been working from Frank Reese birds for a few years and they've done very nicely with them. There is another pullet that's very similar to her and actually weighed more the last time I weighed them all, so I'm thinking I'm going to use both of them this fall and see what I get (my cock is from the same people, but different hatch). I'm going to be working on less cushion and, of course, better tails on the males. That is a Pullet to be proud of
My train of thought has been derailed by this one thread quite a few times ... and I sure am enjoying the tour of the countryside!(I lost my train of thought.. I might continue later.)
GONNA be? You mean she isn't already? What a SHAME!![]()
Do you guys think this chicken meets the SOP? I think she is going to be a future world champ.
Unfortunately ... Yup. And that's one reason why SOP is important, if only as a guideline. Imagine how far off track breeds could get if there was no way to rein in the crosses!Does this mean, for example, a breeder could take a generation of breed 1 and add in a completely different breed (breed 2) and as long as the subsequent generations get back to and stack up to the SOP of breed 1, those later generations, that could be say 10-15% breed 2, are still considered breed 1?
Hey, can someone please educate me on the difference between "Blue" and "Self Blue?"Self Blue

I'll try to find one as soon as I can. It's so hard to find pictures of quality birds
Tell me about it. Before I started this thread I had the feeling it would happen, but I thought I'd give it a whirl
