I get tired of the smell and noise REAL quick. I learned early on that getting them outside asap is the way to go. Fortunately, the weather is pretty mild down here year round, so it doesn't pose much of a problem for the babies. The brooder/coop is working out perfectly. In fact, I'm about to go buy a couple more. SO worth the cost!Wow that 'brooder' coop is gorgeous!!! I would totally brood more chicks if I had something like that. lol. I hate the smell in my house.
All that and a babysitter, too? Awesome!Yep. Cows, chores, raising and growing our food, a 6 year old boy, a 9 month old boy, cooking, cleaning, re-doing our old house, making our furniture, saving us money, errand boy, etc, etc is what I do...... I'm trying to build as big a cow herd as I can....it's going to be a real slow process. That's my main thing for bringing in money.![]()
Hauling and raking hay with the grocery getter out on the back 40....lol....so I could do things and still watch the baby.....![]()

The first two pictures, very interesting view! Love it.
Did you estimate how much each pound of pork cost you to raise and have butchered?Yep, I agree 100%....thinking about butchering them was WAY worse than doing it! After I did it, I felt great to provide meat to the family! It brought order back to the flock and was needed. All around a good thing since I want to raise things and know where my food comes from. It's the route I'm going to take here. Give everything a good a home as possible and some get to stay for a long time and others will be food for the table right here. I see a lot of animals on craigslist and at auctions that just make me sad on how they are living. You're right on everything you typed! I hope it isn't selfish, but I personally gotta experience the joys of broody hens ( which I did last summer ), incubating, buying chicks and such. I don't want to pass anything on down the line to suffer or be stressed and I want the feelings of providing for ourselves......so it is what it is and I feel it really is a respectful thing to do and a great way of life. Plus I feel without a doubt, culling is great for the greater good of herds and flocks...just hard to do sometimes.
I took Bacon to the butcher....(the pig..). Butchering him is over my head right now. It does bother me thinking about not getting my own pigs meat back. I think they did a honest job, but don't know??? I do butcher my own deer, but keep that real simple. The meat from that pig as been so GREAT! I can't believe the flavor! I'm looking for another to get started feeding right now. I'd like another Berkshire.![]()
I put a little salt and pepper on that first rooster and stuck it in the oven for an hour and a half or so....took it out and ate the whole thing right there by the stove with a big glass of milk....didn't even sit down....lol. I'm bad about using condiments on chicken, but didn't feel I needed to. I thought it was great and super tender. I shared the next one.... They didn't have an abundance of meat on them. Looking forward to these bigger meat birds. ...and the dp chickens and roo's as needed too.![]()
Wow...Rufus is a beautiful bird! Royal Palms are a great looking bird. My oldest boy has spent a lot of time with me looking at turkey pictures, looking at turkey hatchery stuff, reading about turkeys and he likes them the best. My little boy is on it too, but just likes the gobblin on youtube...lol. Would you not have the Royal Palms again?
I got that one from Tractor Supply for $230, I think. I'm in Texas too, and the chicks do very well outside. I keep them in the house for the first week, then kick 'em out! I've got 14 peeps in it right now and they've got tons of room.Accidentalfarm:where did you get it from? I'm in texas, so our weather is very mild, and chicks could easily be outside with a heat lamp.
What kind of work is that? Sounds like a fine job to me!Hmm. Wish I had that to drop. But I think these are the last chicks I'm going to brood. I do it for work, but its getting old lol. Can I bring them to you for 4 weeks till I take them back to work lol
Oh, I think I'd love that!
