Faverolles Thread

I'm new to the group because I had ordered about 25 chicks from Ideal, and 9 of them are Salmon Faverolles, and the rest EEers. I got them this morning, and they're all doing quite well. I'm trying to decide which are the boys and which are the girls. None of them have a dark area on their body or wings. Is that the sure fire way to tell. They hatched on the 10th so they're just a little over 24 hours old. How soon do the dark spots show. Right now they all look like powder puffs with legs and are eating and drinking like crazy. Here's what's probably a pretty bad picture, but I wanted to share my excitement!!

Okay. I have pics. I believe there were two roos and several hens--I am hoping they are not siblings. Here is what they look like:The larger of the three. His legs are feathered...you just can't see it here.

There are a few hints of black near the forewing.

This is the only black on this bird.

His little cheeks aren't as pronounced as the other two.

Does your bird look like this? It's a red sex link.

Surprise! Our first Fav baby was hatched this morning. My son is so tickled. He was the first to see it in the bator and when I took it out he was the first to note the extra toe. (I am a little tired.) Now he keeps bursting out, "we have a baby favorelle" without prompting.

Soo cute

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the whole chicken thing, having just won the battle to have backyard chickens in our area. We got our first chicks two weeks ago from a farm that buys chicks from a hatchery. We bought ours the day after they received the shipment, so I'm guessing that means we got them at 4 days old. We decided on a variety to see what we like the best. One of our chicks is a salmon faverolle. She's such a little darling. I'm wondering about her, because she just seems very different from our other chicks, which could very well be a breed thing, but I also want to be sure she's okay or if there's anything we should be doing differently. The other chicks are developing my faster than she is. We also have a black australorp, a speckled sussex and a gold-laced wyandotte. I'd read that the wyandottes develop faster than other chicks, but I can't find anything on my cute little salmon faverolle. While the other chicks are getting feathers all over the place, she's still only getting wing feathers. The others are running around, hopping around, and trying to fly, but the salmon faverolle just likes to lay in her warm spot. She will run around and try to fly, but she just doesn't seem to like to. When we take the chicks out to hold them, the others like to perch on our shoulders. The salmon faverolle will, but she prefers to burrow in the crook of my arm. Which is so darn cute (I'll post a picture). She seems to get colder faster than the other chicks, so I don't keep her out for very long, because she starts shivering. The others don't. She seems to eat and drink just as much as the other chicks. Hubby installed a peep cam (please tell me that's not weird that we watch our chicks via webcam) and watching them, she shows no sign of being bullied (and has no injuries) and she eats and drinks like everyone else.

So I don't know if my comparisons are just wrong because you can't compare the breeds, and she's fine, or if I should be worried about her.

I should add that she was sick last weekend with some kind of weird eye thing, but we gave her a combo of neosporin, visine, and antibiotics and it cleared up within a couple days. The australorp also had the eye thing, which also cleared up. The only other potential health thing that I've given up trying to solve is that she sneezes a lot. But so do the other chicks. It's none of the chicken illnesses I've read about, and that is literally the only symptom any of the chicks have. We were told it might be the bedding, but they're in pine shavings, and when I went to Murdoch's to see if they had different bedding, the lady there who has chickens said that I really shouldn't put them in any other bedding. So I've given up on the sneeze thing. I just thought I'd mention it so you had all the facts.

Anyway, I look forward to learning more about my little bird. Hoping she's not a dud. She even comes when I call and put my hand out. Such a sweetheart!

Burrowing chick. This is her favorite place to be.

Little chick. Look how tiny she is compared to the speckled sussex. She's two weeks old in this pic.

Well I got my fav chicks!! I will have to wait till tomorrow to get some photos, poor things have been in the car for 2 1/2 hrs so they need a break :) They are all having a peck at their food and have found the water so so far so good :)

Very excited and hope that I got some good ones! I picked two and the kids picked the other two. knowing my luck theirs will probably be the better quality LOL

I do have a question though, so should I do anything to them now I have them home? Like worm, lice treatment etc etc? They look fine but not sure if Im supposed to be doing it just in case? I do have them in quarantine away from my other pullets.

They are 11 weeks btw.

Did they get sexed chicks? Make sure when the body feathers come in that she is really a she. Cockerels feather in slowly, and I see some darker primaries on that chick. That doesn't mean anything yet, since hatcheries do produce some mismarked pullets.

Our little fav chick here has great toes but I wanted to ask about fluff color. This one has a red cast to on its back. I never saw this before. Thoughts?
