There is nothing nearby. Haha. I have to drive a bit to get to anything. I have to go to a graduation today, and am trying to get her set with a more solid plan before I leave. It is in the wrong direction of feed store. Here is where I'm at though... I gave Vern a bath in light castle soap water and 3 drops of iodine. Then I refilled her tub with warm water and Epsom salt. 4 cups into 3 gal of water for 20 min. While drying her off I checked her out more. She has two more on either side of her preening gland. I called my Vet, and he should call back once he gets out of a visit. The feed store, and vet ARE in the same direction.Do you have a feed store near by?
The mites are sucking the blood right out of your chickens
Permethrin is save to use on and around chickens, get some asap.
The spinosad seems to be working great. I have been using captain jacks. I can't find the elexer psp around me, and didn't want to even wait to order it off Amazon. Per the thread I read I mixed a 3x dose of captain jacks and coated the empty coop. Disassembled everything possible. Sprayed nest boxes wall ceiling under roost etc. I made a reg strength batch and dunked butts. I misted broody, and verns butt. It said wait 7 days. I did the nest boxes and walls again on day 3. Now that brood is hatching I was going to do the same routine tomorrow. Coop and dunk. Then move her to brood box. Especially if Vern is gonna need the crate to heal. I am an organic gardener by trade and have extensive pollinators garden. I will give her another bath I the AM. The fox is all I can think of. I will mist Vern under her wings. The OP said she is trying spinosad now on the mites. That product has been recommended by TheChickenChick and some others here on BYC. After doing some reading about it, it may work pretty well. It is also an ingredient in my dogs' flea and heart worm pills. I use and agree that permethrin works very well and is safe for chickens, but some people worry about killing bees, especially if they are raising them.
I would try soaking in warm Epsom salts water daily. I haven't seen anything like that either around the vent. I wonder if it has something to do with damage from the fox, or possibley cancer. I would like to know how this turns out--hopefully well.
I agree with @KikisGirls you also need to focus on getting rid of the lice/mites. Clean out the coop and nesting boxes and either use the spinosad or the permethrin spray that you have. If the spinosad is Elector PSP, that should be fine to use. Permethrin, if it has instructions for use on poultry (approved for poultry) that should be fine as well.
Your broody needs to be treated along with the other birds. Your sick girl, I would also treat her, being careful where the spray is applied. You can spritz under the wings and after you have washed/soaked her bum - apply some spray with a cloth around the vent.
I have Here is my next perethran question. Because I did go look and decided with the Spinoza a try. I had been using been, bit not with quick enough results. The apinosad is already working better. Than anythi,g else. She is in the bathroom with me now. They use a sand/ wood ash dust bath so maybe I should mention not all the black specks pictured are mites. There are none crawling on me after carring her around and bathing. I know that doesnt mean my fight is over but it certainly is an improvement. She can hear her chicks outside
