How to give Oral Medications

Oral Dosing by @new 2 pfowl

• How do I know if I should be administering medication orally?

This depends upon various factors, such as what the medication is and how ill your bird is. In general, keep in mind that oral dosing is often the best way to control dosage and to ensure that your bird actually receives this dosage.

• What tools do I need to dose orally? Where do I get them?

You will need a small oral medication (needleless) syringe, suggested size 1 ml/cc, depending upon the dose being administered. They can be easily obtained online (for example, search for “oral medication syringe” on Amazon).

Please see details elsewhere in this thread about where to obtain medication.

• How do I determine the dosage?

Please see helpful dosing information elsewhere in this thread.

• How do I do it, anyways?

You will need a helper to ensure the safety and proper medication of your bird.

1. Have your medication measures and the syringe prepared before taking any action.
2. Catch and restrain the bird.
3. Have your helper gently pry the bird’s beak open.

4. Be sure that you understand where the medication-filled syringe should be inserted.
The opening in the center at the back of the tongue is the trachea – nothing should ever go in there!

5. Gently insert the syringe alongside the tongue, and inject the medication slowly to ensure that it does not spill over into the trachea.

@casportpony I actually have a bag of these syringes from my time with a baby squirrel. I get nervous to feed anything where I might put it down the wrong pipe, but I've got her separated am running to the vets now. They open at 8, but I gotta another waterer. She ate and drank a tiny bit this morning. This whole thread is going to be me saying how greatful I am you are all here. I'm glad I asked and didn't just "squirt it in her mouth". How many ppl would think that hole in the back is where to aim it!

Aim for the right hand side of her tongue. Do not aim for the whole in the middle.

Ok. So the vet gave me 100mg of strawberry tetracycline. I have to give her .2ml 1x a day. I was able to get it in her. I was scared I was gonna hurt her face trying to open her beak. She kept shaking her head. I think I'll do better tomorrow now that I have done it once. She doesn't have much fight in her, but she was not impressed with the syringe. The the lady behind the counter at the vets said if it does,t start improving in 7 days to call back. How fast should antibiotics start working? She went under the pallet in the yard again today while I was at work. She seems to rest well there so I left her. I bet it has less chaos then the coop? I went and got her after work, and brought her in for a bath. She didn't look so great, but did pep up a bit after the Epsom dip.her butt was pretty dirty, but the bumps didnt look quite as irritated as on Friday. I didnt get a picture of both by her preening glad , but they look about the same. Maybe bigger, def. Not smaller. She also ate scrambled eggies. She is very tippy. Her feathers are looking rough. Is this from bathing her in Epsom, and she isn't really maintaining? One on her bum looks bigger. Also while I had her soaking I found two more lump. I checked her over the first time I bathed her, but either missed these... Or they are new since Friday? One under her left wing/in front of her thigh area, the second one is on her crop. Its soft like the others. This is beyond frustrating. I feel helpless. She is back in the coop now seperated. I am going to do another full mite attack on Saturday. That will be 7 days between treatments. Good news is last nights random butt check saw no mites! My rooster Abraham was crawling with them before I super sprayed their butts. Zelda chicks are adorable so that is nice to have in the yard. Any advice, just keep watchi,g her? This feels terrible. Should I update the vet on 2 more bumps or is he just gonna tell me to keep up the antibiotics?
