Favorite backyard mixed chickens?

The offspring will have small little crests that look like a cardinal's crest, and they will be mainly black or white, with perhaps a little red or gold coloring here and there. Don't count on your eggs from the fridge to hatch though. . . But the eggs from the nest are fine just as long as your rooster died less than 1 month ago.

Thanks Illia! I was kinda thinking that too. I wondered if any of the barring would be passed down? I am actually on day 15 for the fridge eggs. Out of the 10 that I put in I had 1 that was a double yolker that quit around day 9. I didn't realize it was a double until I candled at day 7. I learned my lesson to candle first! And 4 that just never developed. But the other 5 are doing great still! I candled last night to check on them and was surprised to see all of the moving around! I'm going to hold out hope on them until they prove otherwise

And the 4 that I got from the nest box are about 3 days behind (my hubby had to bring them with him from Indiana) and they are all doing great and moving around too!

My plain ole sexlinks.....But they are my first set I raised. Got them at TSC. Walked in looked at DH and said, "PLEEEEEEASEEE" And that was the beginning of my obsession! I love these girls so much. Have 3 Black and 6 Red.

I dunno about that. There is a huge thread going on here from folks who have hatched fertile eggs from Trader Joe's and other retail stores, eggs sold for eating and refrigerated for several days. Some have gotten better hatch rates from them than from hatching eggs they bought locally. Interesting thread with several pictures

Refrigerated from the store and hatching:D

Back in the 1970's my dad and grandpa hatched quail and phesant as a side job. They told me that they would refridgerate the eggs for up to two weeks, and then set them in the incubator. They hatched alot of birds too! I have also read that eggs will last up to two weeks as long as they are kept around 50 degrees. After two weeks hatchability declines drastically.
