We weighed & candled eggs tonight (day 6) all have lost appropriate moisture & we only had to pull 3. 2 look like non-starters & 1 had a blood ring. I think that’s pretty decent odds (3/12) for shipped eggs in January right? The 3 from our chicken all look good as well.

So I’m officially done with my batch! I set 22 eggs then removed 3 on day three that weren’t developing and replaced them. Those three have now hatched. I think I removed a few more at lockdown. I only had one that didn’t make it though I still have it in the incubator I’m not hopeful. One baby from the first batch I JUST assisted 3 mins ago and I don’t know what to make of him because they’re all weak at that stage. He pipped at like 1am on Saturday and then popped in a different spot on Sunday (looks like he kept hitting veins because there was blood around both pip spots. So this morning I assisted (after taking out the three from the second batch who pipped after but were already dry and fluffy). The assist was very easy, membrane was moist and shell came away easily from it. I removed only the shell and left the membrane thinking he would just pop right out but after 10 mins (did not want it to dry out) I decided to tear the membrane. The veins and yolk were both long gone. It looks like he had pooped a little bit inside the shell. Seems like a good candidate for failure to thrive. But fingers crossed! I think it’s a boy because only a male could cause so much trouble and anxiety.

I have a male too!!!!! … piped the wrong end and I removed some shell and tore the membrane just enough for him to be able to breath more easily
Probably going to have to assist “him” further as he may not be able to zip on his own but it’ll be hours before I know for sure … what a drama-king

Hope your little guy is just a little pooped from all the hard work and recovers quickly

I hope so too.. it’s been an hour in the incubator (but out of the shell) and the little drama king still hasn’t stood up. Just turtling all over the place. Kicking and screaming though. Starting to get worried but I don’t think there’s much I can do for him until he’s ready to come out of the bator. Once he dries off, probably when I get home from work, if he’s still alive I’ll give him a once over see if maybe he’s got a slipped tendon from fighting with the egg.

I briefly candled most of the eggs last night, sort of just an informal "just checking'. Out of the 22 I set, about 2/3 of them have sure signs of development. Not too surprised I guess...January was bitterly cold here. So I'm guessing the chickens were more concerned with staying warm rather than getting randy, lol. Hopefully the next batch will be a little better, February has been considerably warmer.
I will candle a little more thoroughly in a couple of days and remove the clears. I'm getting excited! I have a couple of my Light Brahma eggs in and I can't wait to get some fuzzy leg babies!
