I have four salmon faverolle hens, 17 weeks old. I have abit more medicated chick feed left, maybe two weeks or less? Is it ok to finish this batch up before switching to layer feed? Can I eat the eggs even if they have the medicated feed and lay? I already have oyster she'll out incase they need extra calcium and they get yogurt a few times a week

You probably shouldn't eat the eggs of medicated chickens, as this can pass these on to you through the eggs. If they are all laying then you can switch to layer feed. Maybe you can give away the feed to a friend with chicks?

When the pullets started getting red combs and wattles, I knew laying was just around the corner. I threw away what medicated food we had left and switched them to regular grower. I didn't want to eat medicated eggs and wasn't sure how long that stayed on their system. We haven't switched to layer food yet since only 2 (of the 6) are laying. There is oyster shell available.

I had switched to non meds feed @12 wks, and switched to layer feed when all hens laid eggs. I occasionally give them flock raiser feed (20% protein) for better plumage w/ oyster shell on the side.

The medicated feed won't hurt the hens if they are only on it for a few more weeks , but DO Not eat the eggs, or let any animal eat them for at least 2 weeks after they come off the medicated feed.

I read this:
  1. Amprolium IS NOT an antibiotic
  2. Amprolium has no withdrawal period, either in birds raised for meat or those used for egg production.

However, I think a few weeks would be what most people suggest.

The girl at the store said it should be fine to eat the eggs but I'm going to wait a week at least. I bought layer feed crumbles and have the girls a yogurt treat :))
