Feeding chickens

My chickens waste a lot of crumbles. I got a new feeder they can't stick their toes in to scatter the feed, but they still scatter a lot when they eat, digging in with their beaks and shaking their heads. I am afraid that all that feed on the ground will get sour and make them sick. Any suggestions?
Speaking of treats, Now and then I give them some scratch feed, a suet cake, and some overdone spaghetti in which I dissolve a handful of calcium/vitamin D capsules. Occasionally I give them some dry mealworms.

You could look into fermenting their feed....There is no waste.
