Could someone tell me the proper way to clean and prepare eggshells to feed back to the hens.

I let them air dry then smash them up and feed them. Some people bake them first....I'm too lazy. The chickens don't care either way.

do you wash them out and remove the membrane?

I am not sure if this is the right way, but

I put the egg shells on a cookie pan, and put them in the oven for a few minutes. just so they become brittle.
then I crush them up and mix with the chicken feed

I wash the out side of the shell, but leave every thing else.

thank you. Do you bake them to remove bacteria?

I don't clean them, I just put them in the oven for a wee while when I'm cooking something else and then crush them up and give them to the chooks.

actually I zap them in the microwave for a couple minutes and then pulverize them in the blender - makes it easy to get them to a mixable size.
