Female Coturnix swollen knees

From what ive read that seems fine. They are omnivores so they do eat insects and they do need more protein than other fowl. Qhat i did qith Baba Yaga is increase the amounts of sprouts and leafy greens i give them. Ive heard of people havjng amazing results with gout and sour cherries.

Its also possible that this was the result of inbreeding or just bad luck. If your other girls are fine and the vet says they diet is fine than you are likely doing everything right.

Avian gout primarily affects the kidneys so the extra greens also help woth extra hydration. It could also be from insufficient calcium.

For comfort, bathing her knee in epsom salts occassionally will help. My vet was considering amputation when her joint started impending her mobility.

If its particularly hot or red it might need to be drained a little.

My Baba Yaga died just two weeks ago but she lived a good 4-5 months after initial presentation. Usually the presenration jn the joints comes after a decent amount of kidney damage.

Yku know your girls vest so you will know if she seems to be in pain.

Thanks for this info. Was Baba Yaga a quail or chicken? Either way, this is helpful. I will definitely get the greens, would like to soak her in the Epsom salts also. I do believe she is in pain. It's sad. What should I do for the pain?

Baba Yaga was a Tibetan coloured Coturnix Quail.

Warm soak in epsom salts help. You can also massage the joint a little to get the fluid moving around. You might get Metacam from the doctor but if it is gout it can further cause kidney damage which is sort of problematic.

This is less recommended BUT you can reduce a bit of the swelling by squeezing out some of the fluid from the joint. If you can, clove oil can help reduce the pain of using a sterilized needle to pucture the skin and then squeeze out some of the pus and fluid that had been pooling around the joint. The problem is that you risk administering a new infection which you really don't want to do.

I also put some bag balm on the joint when I was massaging it just in case.

You can also use pureed cabbage, pork lard, and some honey in a poultice, apply to the joint, and cover with a bandage. It is supposed to help with the swelling.

This looks very similar to what my Baba Yaga had. It turned out to be a manifestation of bird gout. If it is, then it's usually the result of too much protein in their diet. It almost never shows up without kidney damage as well.

However, this could also be the result of an infection. If you are able to get her to a vet, that is your best option.
Thank you. You are awesome! The quail ankles are getting worse but my husband's been in the hospital so he's been my patient. She is otherwise doing well and still getting around actually pretty well. But today I finally have time to bring her in and start treating the knees. I have the anti-inflammatory from the Vet and am going to try that again also...Thanks so much for your instructions. Don't think I'll be able to find pork lard here in the city to make the poultice, but I will try to apply a soothing poultice - that's a good idea. Thank you so much! I really appreciate it.
