Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

How do you do your kombucha? You think one of these from vinegar would work with tea?

No, I ordered mine from GetKombucha. Well worth it. I put the scoby and few oz of kombucha they send in with sweetened tea made with 4-6 teabags (I mix black and green) and 1 cup cane sugar and 3/4 gallon filtered water. If you live around clorine just run your water the night before and let sit out to evaporate out. When completely cool put scoby and liquid in and cover with tower or several layers of gauze clothe. Secure with a rubber band or fruit flies will get in and lay eggs. I bought one of those 2 gallon jugs with spicket and make about once a week. It'll take a little longer the first time but after that about 2 days. When it's done you can pour it off into bottles I use plastic and add flavorings and honey , I love peach slices. Close tight and leave on counter overnight and in the morning, burp it a little. It will have bubbles like a soft drink. Fridge for several hours. Goood.

Sounds good with the peach slices. I bet pineapple would be really good - sweet and sour.

I know I've said this before....but I'll say it again...I'm fascinated by these CX chicks when they are allowed to free range early and left to their own devises.  They are FAST!  I just saw them speeding to the coop and huddling down because some crows went overhead....good survival instincts intact even though they are bred for commercial use.  They are 3 wks old today.

I'm also amazed at how hard they work for their food....they are on the move constantly and when I go to feed them a second time in the evenings their crops are bulging already.  That's food I didn't have to buy and feed to them, though I know they work off a good bit of that by running around, they seem to be all the more healthy from it for the exercise they are getting.

I'd be very surprised if CX that get this much exercise and natural foods at this early age were to just keel over with a heart attack later on and I think that might be the misstep many make by waiting until these birds are 4 wks or older to get them out on ranging.  By then they have had very little exercise and have gained too much weight for good mobility, so any high temps, humidity or sudden activity may strain their cardio system too much.

The featured story about raising CX for meat - the truth, shows what you have been saying all along. It's true the CX can be active, I have 4 that I had not planned on getting but saw them in the feed store then when I brought them home n read the reviews I was disappointed, I have been reading and watching the videos you post about them and watching mine n I'm not seeing what most people say about them. Yes they eat a lot, but they also grow faster, they are as active as my others n get on the roost bar just like the others. Mine don't just sit in their poop. After I process and see how they taste, I think I'll get some more which I would not have considered if you had not kept clearing the misconception that most people have about them.

If you haven't read the featured story yet, I think you might enjoyed it. Later I might post my pics of the CX free ranging hoping to get some pics today.

The thing that makes this even better for me is that we are re-siting and re-arranging the run for the girls and we are creating a largish area of soil to scratch around in  (bigger than they currently have)  -  I will be inoculating this soil with the LAB as it goes down  a couple of days before the girls are let loose on it-  so it can start working immediately on any pee/poo the hens deposit.   They currently are on hard ground 60% and soil/natural ground 40%  -  the new areas will give them 85% natural ground/soil and 15% hard ground.    Perfect timing for me to learn about this.

I think the LAB will be my saviour    -   I am falling in love with those little bacteria  :love

That video that the poster of the feature article says changed their mind about CX is a video that Bee took of her birds. I don't know why that wasn't mentioned in the article.

This is Bee with her birds...

It should have been mentioned, I've seen Bee's videos, at first I thought Bee had written it then I checked. Its nice to see reviews written by people who have raised these in a loving manner not as just someone who wanted results without putting in some love.

This never gets old. I've seen it 10 times I know but it's so cute. And vindication that it can be done.
