Finally joining the flock - Hello BYC!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Okay. You got me. What's a morkie? A Yorkie and a ....??
Who passed the coop inspection, Code Enforcement or the chickens?

A morkie is a Maltese/Yorkie mix. They're generally little purse dogs (my wife's aunt places dogs for people in apartments), but our boy is a bit of an outlier at 17 lbs. Not overweight, just as if someone scaled him up to a bigger, proportional size.

The inspection here is by the county health department. It's basically just a quick check to make sure your coop is big enough for the number of chickens you have/want, and to provide some other suggestions on coop improvements if needed. The guy from the department literally just measured two sides and said, "OK, you're good."

Once you pass inspection, you get a license for the birds, similar to any other pet licensing, though it needs to be renewed yearly.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens Terry sure seems like a new way to get more money
out of folks or play big brother :frow

Thankfully (and surprisingly!) it's a free application and license. Just a little bit of a hassle to make sure you get it done. I appreciate that they want to make sure people aren't stuffing dozens of birds into a tiny coop, but I think they could probably provide more/easier to access guidance so people know how to plan their coop properly.

Agree that they should provide some guidance or at the very least, refer them to BackyardChickens.com!!

Hi all! My name is Terry, and after a lot of lurking and searching these forums for information and advice, I've finally decided to join. Thanks for all the great info!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

My wife and I have been talking about getting chickens for years, but just finally purchased a house with enough yard to do so. We purchased our chicks in early March of this year from a local farm store, and have just passed our coop inspection and are officially backyard chicken keepers!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

We have 5.

(3) What breeds do you have?

One Rhode Island Red, one Black Australorp, one Welsummer, and two Ameraucanas.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

So far, it has been learning new skills as I built our coop, and also watching the chickens grow and learn.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Baking, crafting, woodworking, and enjoying craft cocktails/craft spirits.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

My wife Emily is also a member of the board (though I don't recall her username at the moment). We have one dog, a morkie named Peanut. We're still working on getting him used to the chickens. I work in nonprofit lobbying and advocacy.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I learned about BYC from my wife as we were planning out our coop and our little flock. I finally joined to be able to ask specific questions I have as we learn more about managing our birds, and because it seemed like a very friendly, welcoming community.
Hi and :welcome glad that you have joined us. Your list of questions is great! I will do the best that I can to answer as many as I can for you.

1-2. I am 10 years deep into my backyard chicken hobby. Chicken math says that I have no more the about 50 chickens :lau give or take a few.

3. To answer this question, it's probably easier for me to link my blog for you. I have several breeds, you can meet them all here > meet-the-flock

4. I have many favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens, its hard to name just one. But I will have to say that Gardening with the girls is my favorite aspect of having them. They do so much more for me than just lay eggs. I put them to work, all the while keeping them happy, health, and interned. https://thekuntryklucker.blog/2016/01/03/gardening-with-the-girls/

5. As for my other hobbies, I am an avid reader. I love to read anything about vampires, horror, dragons and so forth. I also possess a degree in astrophysics which keeps me busy with the other hobby and interests astrophotography.

6. As for the fam, I have two boys and a hubby, make that three boys . I am a writer, I write for several magazines and of course my own blog "The Kuntry Klucker". These pretty much keep me busy. In my off time, I enjoy flying, I am a licensed private pilot. I take to the skies when I feel that I need to get away from it all.

7. That's a funny story. I have wanted to keep chickens for quite some time. But I had a hard time finding some good information on how to go about this adventure. At some point in my venture I came across BYC. I lurked for a while then after a few years decided to join. I am 8 years deep into the site and love it!! I took a break for several years and then came back finding that I was able to help others more after my experience with keeping chickens grew. Now, to help assist others I have started a blog featuring my "Backyard Divas" and enjoy helping others get a start in keeping a flock of their own.

Keeping chickens has been an adventure and a thrill that I am beyond addicted to. I started with a small modest flock of Buff Orpingtons, since then my backyard has grown into a real "coop-hood" as I now have and maintain 7 coops. It is my life and I love it!!

Again, welcome aboard, I hope you enjoy your time here. Welcome to the Coop!!:wee
