Was it suggested that you give this hen some oral calcium? If not, I think giving her some calcium would be .

Wow, she is really having problems with shell-less eggs. I would continue the calcium every day for 3 days. Egg yolk has vitamin d so that is good. Phosphorus is good to use as well as vitamin d and calcium. I think that plain yogurt or cottage cheese, sunflower seed and spinach in a small treat would have plenty of that. Now that she has laid, do you think letting her visit with her flock for the afternoon might be good?

Oh, I understand. Amoxicillin would be better than Emycin I think, but Baytril is better. If anyone has any cipro tablets, that is close to Baytril

all I can find locally is oxytetracycline for livestock. I’m striking out, and my order from your linked suggestion won’t be here for a few days. Ugh.

I understand your frustration with acquiring perscription medications. I would appreciate if a knowlegable person could do an article about what ones we need to have on hand and how and where to get them. Expecting anyone to have human medication leftovers isn't a good idea. Any human prescribed antibiotics needs to finish the entire amount prescribed. Saving some for later causes germs to build immunities to the antibiotic and be ineffective for the human in the future.

I gave her some more calcium, mixed into more of her layer feed, with a tablespoon of plain yogurt, and 1/5 tablet of oxytetracycline. It’s 250mg per tablet if anyone is wondering. Maybe the ‘cycline will help a little until the good stuff, “Eggsessive” suggested comes in.

Anyone know what dose, and how often, of the oxytetracycline I should use until the Baytril gets here?

She gobbled up the food again. I made her a small perch out of 2x4 scrap that I put in her crate. She happily climbed up on it, and is now “roosting” for the night. I’ll check her crop in the AM. I checked in on her a little while ago, and there was a small pile of poop already under her mini roost.

I’ll see what tomorrow brings. I will take her out to mingle with her flock mates tomorrow. In a crate, but in their run. I think she will like that.

You buy Baytril from pigeon and gamebird sites. Almost all others Google the name of the drug and "for fish".

Oxytetracycline is usually put in the water for poultry. You can give it mixed into water 400mg into a gallon of water. If using a quart or liter waterer, you could put 1/2 tablet into a liter. That would be close to 125mg per liter. Then switch to the baytril when it comes in. Baytril dosage is 0.05 ml per pound orally twice a day for 5-6 days.
