First Egg Countdown

Lol! I know that feeling! My girls are 25 weeks today and only 4 maybe 5 out of 14 have started laying! Just wait, the first one will knock your socks off! ;)

I go out every morning, hoping for the best! When I set up the nest boxes, I put in shavings covered by straw, and threw in a few plastic Easter eggs. So far, they have flung most of the straw around the coop, and it looks like they were playing soccer with one of the eggs.

I think they might need some remedial classes in appropriate chicken behavior.

Sounds like at least the r getting in the nest boxes investigating!! My 1st eggs I found 2 one morning. I was so excited I ran in the house and showed them to my bf and he acted funny. I didn't know y. Then I got to thinking, those eggs r awfully big for their "first eggs"! His mom had come down the evening before and put 2 brown eggs in my nest box. I was FURIOUS!!!! I had to leave my house and go for a drive because I couldn't stop crying! Its funny now, but non "crazy chicken people" just don't understand. Lol

Oh no! I would've been furious too, lol! People have no idea!

Oh, wow! Congratulations! I'm so glad Lucky is able to lay, she was attacked by a hawk and survived it, is that right?

And, yes, our eggs are not white, they are more of a cream color. I try to get good pictures of the color, but they always look white in the pics and that isn't accurate. Glad to know I wasn't imagining it! Lol! Actually, I put one next to a store bought white egg and you can totally see the difference.
Yup, she is our survivor! This is maybe her 3rd or 4th egg then, because I have been seeing an off white one for a little bit now. I have never caught her in the box though, but she is a bit shy. Her comb and waddles are definitely red though. Dotty, not so much. I am glad that there are two of them left though. They stick together, often laying under the pine tree with their wings fanned out soaking up the sun. It has been a while since I have seen a hawk so the whole flock free ranges in the afternoon. My rooster has also gotten extra mean, so I have all the confidence in the world that he will do what he needs to do to protect them! They love it and beg at the door of their run to come out!

We have 13 pullets and it's been so interesting to watch their development. We still have one that has no sign of a comb (it's actually still black with little tiny nubbies poking out), and her wattles are these tiny little strips under her beak. Most of them have red combs and wattles and their faces are starting to show some color. They just go at their own pace, getting ready when the do. It's just so fun1

I'm sure Dotty will come along soon. Are Lucky's eggs very pointy on one end? Ours are laying eggs like that, pretty small, but perfectly shaped and the shells are so tough! Nothing at all like store bought eggs.

Edited to add: All of ours also love to sunbathe, they look so graceful and pretty laying like that, dozing in the sun. I never realized how much chickens love sunlight!

Isn't it so exciting! This is our first time owning our own chickens and I'm just so crazy about them. we just started getting eggs and it's so much fun! :weee
It's never a dull moment with chickens . Always something from watching how fast they grow , to when will they lay their first eggs, to what color, how many ect. Faces are really coloring up, my speckle Sussex was practicing her egg song ( checked the coop 3,times to make sure she didn't lay it off in a corner somewhere). Combs are getting redder. Enjoy!!!! These are the little things that make keeping chicken fun! People that don't do it just don't understand . Better than TV.
