First Egg Countdown

Well I finally got my first egg this morning. I sent my 9 year old girl out to take a look since my wife said she heard a chichen yesterday afternoon making all kinds of noise. We cheaked yesterday afternoon after the noise only to find nothing. This morning she came running back into the house holding it in her hand and yelled upstairs, "WE GOT AN EGG" I think this egg came from my rescue chicken. She is a Cochin that was the sole survivor from a bear attack. So really i havent gotten an egg yet from my original six but it sure is exciting to get one. Two of my other girls should be laying any time. Here is a pic.

My bantam finally laid an egg. As tiny as the LF first eggs have been, I was sure it would be jelly bean sized. It's small, but only a tad smaller than my LF girls' eggs. Sure is cute. The funny thing is, the noise she makes before and after laying is bigger than her sisters make. She's little in size only. She has a very BIG attitude!

Do ya'll have an issue with mosquito's piling up in the coop? If so, should I try and do something? I live in Southern Louisiana and concerned about West Nile. Thanks!!

You'll never get eggs that way. You have to go out and buy some, so they will lay.
I managed to get 5 today - so until I bake something, I'm good. 5 sounds like a good number of eggs until I say that I have over 30 chickens.

It's like little dog syndrome. Sometimes the smallest ones make the biggest amount of noise.

Nope, no mosquito issues in the coop here. But CA isn't a moist climate.

I live in the GA mountains, where we get a few skeeters. But, I haven't had any in the coop. I have a self-refilling waterer and keep mosquito dunks in the rain barrel, so we've been fine.

Oh. I also keep DE sprinkled in the run and hen house. Don't know if that makes a difference or not, but it sure can't hurt.

Hey, I live in the North GA mountains, too! I also use the DE deep litter method. No mosquitos, flies, odor, mites, etc. Love it!
