I haven't heard of these chickens before, reading your last few posts has me interested though. I'm going to have to do some more research!

It finally happened! All the girls made a big racket this morning with their egg singing. Around 9:00, Agnes went into a nesting box and sat there quietly for about an hour and then announced her egg with a nice egg song! What excitement!

She layed a teeny pee wee egg, 25 grams, but beautifully formed. Good girl!

For the record, here is how it went down for us, timing wise...

- I noticed Agnes had big comb and wattles about 4 weeks ago.
- They turned bright red about 2 weeks ago.
- First squat was 5 days before her first egg.
- she discovered her "big girl voice" (egg song) 2 days before the first egg.

It's my first egg day too!!

I've been worrying myself sick all week, thinking something was horribly wrong with my 28 week-old buff silkie, Tessa. She had been squatting and practicing her egg song (good signs), but was also waddling and pulling her legs up underneath her while she stood and had a very swollen abdomen (bad signs). Last night I had myself convinced that she had egg yolk peritonitis and was going to die...

Then this morning, I found this little beauty, right in the nesting box:


1 1/8oz of creamy white silkie egg goodness! I'm so relieved that Tessa is okay after all, and so proud of my big girl!

I figured that out after I decided to look into them more. I went to the "Chicken Breeds" section of this forum and typed in the name and it pulled up some good stuff. I think the one I read was actually posted by you but I could be wrong. I think you or someone, was asking where they could get them, someone posted the link of a site you can order them from. I clicked on that and after reading it I put it together. We have a black sex link. She's funny. She was the shyest one until about 3wks ago. She was the one that didn't want you to touch her, and if you looked at her to closely, she would run. Lol. Now though, (and I have no idea what happened to change her mind) she comes right up to everyone. She is very friendly, her name is Pepper. I must admit (rookie mistake) I thought when we bought her that she was going to be a black chicken, she was when she was a chick and the name made me think that as well but now she's a dark reddish brown with black markings here and there. She's pretty, just not what I was expecting. I tried to get a variety of colors but they have all turned out to look pretty similar.

There's always spring chicks though, right!?!

Some new babies to wait on for eggs

By their markings, I think I have 3 pullets and 1 cockerel, but time will tell. They are welsummer chicks with my Icelandic hen as the broody. (she's only 7 months old herself)

I have 2 other broodies with babies due next week - wellies and black sex links.
